IMG_3932

No way, José that it is MAY 1st.
No way, José that this little blog was mentioned on the Washington Post yesterday for that orange bathroom redo!
No way, José that my MOM, COUSIN, & AUNT will be here TOMORROW for 10 days!

We’re busy cooking, baking, cleaning and preparing for our guests! I’ve got recipes to share and I’m almost done with Round 3. Justin is looking over the post and hopefully going to answer 1 question himself! Stay tuned!

We’ve been busying ourselves outside…

Ok… before I go please accept the following PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the health of your children’s skin…

I am an absolute SUNSCREEN FANATIC. My kids rarely go outside {nor do I} without it. I’ve tried every kind of sunscreen on the market. Most types will burn the children’s eyes. FINALLY I have found a sunscreen that I can rub all over their faces that doesn’t burn their eyes at ALL. The other kind is for their bodies, it’s called Quick Dry… it’s lotion but dries in about 30 seconds. I love both of these! Coat your kids up in these before sending them outside, there’s no reason for them to suffer from burning eyes… or sunburns!

Banana Boat Kids TEAR FREE for their sensitive little FACES & Banana Boat Kids QUICK DRY for their bodies…

FWIW, I swear by a combo of Aveeno Baby and Mustela for faces. I got a bit whigged out by all the bad press sunscreens were getting a few years ago and these have really high SPFs (50+) and mostly natural ingredients- zinc oxide, etc. No tears, complaints, or sunburns.

I'm enjoying reading your blog quite a bit. My m-in-l turned me onto it after she caught your reference to the Tim & Sally books a few months ago. She did the PR campaign for them. I also have two girls exactly Morgan and Paige's ages and your photos reminded my m-i-l of my girls. I try to blog as well but I'm not as prolific as you are! = )

Congrats on the Post recognition. The bathroom project was fun to read and I am happy to learn that there are more heinous bathrooms than our northern VA pink, lime green 1950s specials out there!

It’s definitely “Post” worthy! I was going to suggest sending it to BHG magazine. I think they do a feature now each month on decorating on a budget…

It is so much more interesting and fun to see a bathroom re-do like yours, than someone who has an unlimited budget…like who couldn’t have a fab bathroom for $75K??? Yours looks like million bucks, but you didn’t have to spend it:)

Congrats! Keep the home stuff coming, I love seeing your creativity:)

I totally agree about the sunscreen! I used the Banana Boat Kids Tear Free (SPF 50) all summer at my MIL’s pool last year. I prefer the Ultra Mist that sprays on quickly. I have 3 kids, too and the lotion takes longer for me. Of course, I use lotion for faces. It’s the only thing I’ve ever found that doesn’t make my 3 year old’s eyes swell shut.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your blog! I live in Nashville now but I’m originally from Alabama.

Thanks for the tips on the face sunscreen – doesn’t bother EC much, but Wilson gets it in his eyes EVERY TIME!!!! I usually use the stick, but I’m going to try that now – at least on him and Henderson! Have a super duper weekend – can’t wait to hear and see all about it!

Darby – I’m new to your blog and blogging in general. It’s an interesting, yet funny way to “get to know someone” w/o ever actually meeting them. Nonetheless, it’s filling the void created by the disappearence of some of my favorite magazines! On that note, you have a wonderful sense of design and homemaking skills and better than any magazine offers, a wonderful understanding of the importance of faith and family. Thanks for sharing a bit of your journey (and where did you find your wonderful schoolhouse lights?!) Best. Kate

That sunblock has been in use in our family for a few years now…love it!!! However, I recently discovered that Target came out with their brand of this sunblock (it even says compare to Banana Boat on it)and I checked the ingredients on both tubes. They are indentical – word for word! So, since the Target brand is $3 or $4 less – and the tube is bigger – I tried it. It was just as great as the beloved Banana Boat and there was absolutely ZERO stinging…eyes or anywhere else! I know you’re always looking for a good deal, and this is definitely one of them! 🙂

    Congratulations on the Washington Post!

Enjoy your time with your family!

Congrats on the Washington Post! That’s great for you! I adore your bathroom re-do. It looks fabulous! Your blog is great and I love all of your ideas.

I just wanted to pass this link along: https://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php. It rates the safety of different products: lotions, sunscreen, wipes, makeup, etc. against cancer and things like that. It’s interesting. We’ve always used (and been very happy) with Banana Boat but finally deterred this year for something with a lower risk rating. I hope it helps a little.

Thank you again for the fabulous ideas, thoughts, and pictures!

You are amazing. Just now catching up on reading and can’t believe that chic bathroom! $500 budget??? Now that’s talent. You and E should have a design firm with offices in Dothan and Santa Rosa Beach. Or just write that lifestyle design book that’ll fly off the shelves.
