Here Goes…

Posted in: Life

The longer I wait to write about our vacation the harder it is for me to remember all the wonderful details… so here goes.

We were in PCB {Panama City Beach, FL}, and let me start by saying PCB ain’t what she used to be, I didn’t see a single airbrushed t-shirt! :) As I mentioned before, we were delighted and honored to be the guests at McBeach, the super fabulous, very accommodating vacation home of Mic {whom I will also refer to as “Miki”} & Mac. They used to reside in the lovely beach house and now live on a pond… I’ll show you it too.

I don’t even really know where to start with this post, I have so many pictures and such wonderful memories, a little blog post certainly can’t be all encompassing, but I’m going to try anyway. If you don’t have a hot cup of coffee and some time, you may want to go get one and clear your schedule for a few minutes.

We’ve never stayed “ON” the beach before as a family. We went on a church retreat when I was pregnant with John Martin… 3rd trimester + beach retreat center does NOT count as “staying on the beach“. So this was a first for us and we were all in heaven. They loved every single minute of being just a few feet away from the biggest playground they’ve ever seen. I can’t tell you how many times Morgan told me she wished she lived there. October is a WONDERFUL time to go to the beach. The crowds are slim, the temperatures are down, and the gulf is still warm!

We experienced the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. They clearly were marked with the fingerprints of a creative God who loves us enough to display himself in such a glorious way.

It was so freeing to let the children run and dance with the sand between their toes.

Justin had to work some back at home so he spent a few nights away, here’s a picture Mom snapped of me and the kids, kinda looks like they adopted me.

Speaking of Mom, we were delighted that she could be there with us and sad that DaddyBoy couldn’t get away from the corporate world to enjoy sun, sand, and grandkids.

momraigerandrover

MommaSis, Uncle Chance, and little Sloane were there too for a few days…
sloane
Erika’s not too sure about John Martin, Sloane’s not too sure herself, and well, quite frankly, I don’t blame either of them. He’s pictured here with a domino that I feel certain he thought would be best placed in Sloane’s throat.

Our time was full of “highs” so I’m going to try to hit them all, briefly, or I’ll be here all day.

The porch… oh, the porch, it’s 100% Rover-proof with splinter-free composite decking, child-proof gates, and a heated water hose to fill the  baby pool. The kids could have spent 100% of their time out there… that is, if it didn’t overlook the gulf and make them want to go there too! And bathing suits were optional… for the kids!

 roverpool

Morgan collected seashells {and seaglass for me because she knew it was my favorite} every time she had the chance:

morgansassortment

She {like her sister & brother} went to bed late, got up early, & watched a lot of Nick Jr. {we don’t get it, I didn’t know it exsisted, they loved it, and I let them}.

Honestly, we could have stayed in the house and been perfectly content; it happened to be…

This was the view from our room:

With cool nights I never wanted to crawl out from under the WONDERFUL chenille bed spread & duvet… it was a wonderful combination. The chenille is so fun and it’s everywhere you look at McBeach. Miki ordered it from Linen Source & the cute printed pillows from Garnet Hill! Don’t invite us to your house if you don’t want us to check your tags! :)

The girls slept in the “Gulf View” bunk room and loved every minute of their slumber in the bunk beds!

We spent a lot of time playing at the shore jumping and splashing and watching dolphins as they did the same.

Every morning the sun would rise behind the pier and I would watch with a cup of coffee in hand.

Just north of the pier is Pier Park, a brand new shopping center development with great shopping and great food. We walked there on a few occasions and the kids loved it. We all had our first 5 Guys burgers and sat next to a blog stalker, hi Ashley!

We also had the pleasure of spending some time at Mic & Mac’s new home, they traded beach living for pond living.

It’s equally as fabulous as McBeach, in it’s own way.

Before I go any further… here they are, I like everything about this picture except the shirt he’s wearing:
mikiandmac

John Martin thoroughly enjoyed his time with them.

Miki found suckers for all of them inside the belly of a BIG fish. Justin doesn’t look too sure, I wish I knew what Paige was saying. Probably something like “I’m never eating food again, I will only eat suckers as long as I live.”
justinpandjm

While the kids drooled over their suckers, Mom, Erika & myself drooled over the new house… with good reason.

My kids always have the hardest time making themselves at home.

Miki really has a wonderful & creative eye. She had this chair cushion reupholstered in a vintage Florida tablecloth. I love it!
chairwithtablecloth

Not far from the fabulous chair is this fabulous vanity.
redvanity

She also has a built in coffee maker that she never has to fill up… I’m trying to figure out what Justin would say if I suggested we rip a wall open in our kitchen to accommodate for it… I love it. Seriously, you add grounds and press “brew”. It’s programmable and allows you select 1 cup, 1/2 pot or a full pot. Don’t you want one too?!

We had an absolutely wonderful time, it seemed to go by quickly, the girls and John Martin loved everything about the house, the beach, and the porch. We loved watching them explore new surroundings. Miki & Mac, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for opeing up your home to our family, it was certainly a vacation for the record books.

Several of you have inquired about where we were and if it is for rent. If you will email me {darby@flythroughourwindow.com} I can put you in touch with Miki. They do not have it listed with a rental agency, however they do have a few weeks next summer when they will not be using it and would gladly rent it out if you’re interested. It is a very roomy house and will comfortably sleep 14 to 16 people. I even think it would be a great get away for 3 young families, as it’s all set up for small children with baby gates, enclosed “child-proof” porches, bunk beds, etc. The only thing I think we forgot to bring was a baby sitter so we could have adult evenings out at dinner, movies, etc! If you are looking for any other beach rentals, Melise at Harris Properties is one my advertisers, she too has a handful of wonderful rentals just down the shore in Gulf Shores. Melise agrees that October is a wonderful time for a beach vacation… the rates drop and so do the crowds!

Be back soon when I get to the bottom of my laundry pile!

I love Paige with the suckers! Yum, yum. My kids love Nick Jr. too. It used to be noggin and it just doesn’t seem as bad as other cartoon channels.
I think the gulf beaches are the best! All of that white sand and blue water… Beautiful pictures and it looks like it was a beautiful time. I’m glad you enjoyed every second of it.

  • Comment by Leigh Scott — October 21, 2009 @ 7:50 pm

That beach is so pretty! The beaches here in SC are lovely, don’t get me wrong, but that contrast of white sand and BLUE water is stunning. “Looks like they adopted me”…you are a funny gal.

  • Comment by mary katharine — October 21, 2009 @ 8:17 pm

Okay, since I’m in my sixth year of flying solo as a parent of our five girls while my husband is away with the Army, I’m thinking I should ask my husband for that coffee pot and I think he should get it for me. Thanks for the Christmas idea. HA!!!

And lastly, I’m convinced the explanation for all of their great taste is embodied in the shirt:). ROLL TIDE!

  • Comment by Ashley — October 21, 2009 @ 8:25 pm

Darby! This is GREAT! Your trip looks fabulous. These kind of posts always make me excited about our little family as it grows. I can’t wait to do things like this (okay, “can” wait…loving this time right now!). Anyway…your pics are getting better and better. Those sunsets are amazing! Keep ‘em comin’!

  • Comment by Melise — October 21, 2009 @ 9:04 pm

It’s amazing to me how you can make the simplest pictures tell such a fabulous story! Once again, I’m blown away. It looks like the most wonderful family vacation! Doesn’t the beach just fill your soul!? That pic of JM looking at Sloan is cracking me up….what is going on in that little head!?

Also, how the heck do you entertain your 3 munchkins all day withOUT Nick Jr (used to be Noggin!)? It’s my rock some days! haha

    {thanks ever so much for the plug by the way….you didn’t have to do that!}

  • Comment by amber — October 21, 2009 @ 9:16 pm

Love the Beach House!!! I wanna go to the beach now!

  • Comment by Melissa — October 21, 2009 @ 9:22 pm

You are so right about how PCB “ain’t what she used to be”! I had never been a huge fan of PCB, but we stayed at Splash (west of Pier Park) this summer and loved it. It is a great resort for families! We also had 5 Guys for the first time and loved it too!

  • Comment by Hillary @ The Other Mama — October 21, 2009 @ 9:34 pm

Absolutely beautiful! I love all the wording around the house and the location is amazing! There’s nothing like being RIGHT ON the beach, is there? And that first picture better be in a frame immediately! Gorgous!

  • Comment by Elizabeth — October 21, 2009 @ 10:03 pm

Looks amazing!! That’s so nice that you were able to get away and relax and the kids had such a good time.

  • Comment by Rachel — October 21, 2009 @ 11:22 pm

Oh Darby! I’m so glad that you all enjoyed time away. It is so precious to be with those you love without the eveyday surroundings staring back at you. Love the pictures! My heart is pining away for a Gulf Shores vacay again!

  • Comment by Meleah — October 22, 2009 @ 8:07 am

What a beautiful beach house! I have the built in coffee maker in the picture…and it is FABULOUS! Not as expensive as you would think, we added it when we remodeled our house and it is our favorite thing!!

  • Comment by Jill Cribb — October 22, 2009 @ 8:25 am

Love this house & their permanant residence too! I would die for their fireplace with the tabby oyster shell surround. Glad y’all had a fabulous time. I didn’t realize the Gulf water was so beautiful….I live 15 min. from Myrtle Beach (SC) and our water is not pretty at all. Oh, and didn’t you love 5 Guys, it’s so wonderful!

  • Comment by Katherine @ Grass Stains — October 22, 2009 @ 8:48 am

What is it abour your blog that makes me want to go wherever you’ve been? :) Your photos and descriptions are always so beautiful. And I love that you got to see Erika and Sloane! JM reminds me SO MUCH of our youngest (we have three boys, 6, 5 and 18 months), and he cracks me up because I can just see our Jake doing every single thing that JM does … especially the “protecting his interests” thing. The jealousy is ADORABLE.

  • Comment by Sarah@Clover Lane — October 22, 2009 @ 8:57 am

I think that is one of my most favoritely (not a word) decorated houses I have ever seen! Thanks for the beatiful pictures.

What a fun post! I agree, PCB is not what it used to be. My parents have a condo there and I love the thought that our family will get to make memories at the beach for years to come! There’s just nothing like it. We’re headed down this weekend to enjoy the October weather. Great pictures and neat beach house!

  • Comment by Abby Maddox — October 22, 2009 @ 9:12 am

SO SO worth the wait. Great post! I laughed out loud at the picture of you and the kids…Do you think it’s possible there’s something Justin isn’t telling you? Does he have a supply of other babies’ mamas that he brings into the delivery room post-partum? Seriously though, you are all so beautiful you MUST be related. Justin just apparently has found some way to make blonde a dominant gene :)

  • Comment by Tricia — October 22, 2009 @ 9:18 am

What a wonderful getaway! I think the absolute joy was captured in the photo of your three little ones dancing in the amazing sunset. It was good to see your mom enjoying the trip and did I spy baby Sloane all pretty in pink? Glad you enjoyed your respite by the sea.

  • Comment by Stephanie — October 22, 2009 @ 12:47 pm

Isn’t relaxing at the beach the best? My family has a big house on the Oregon coast–it’s so wonderful to have a place to spend a few days at a slower pace with friends and family. And you can’t beat starting a day off by watching the sun rise over the ocean!

What a blessing that vacation was for you and your family! And thank you for sharing with us the wonderful pictures!

  • Comment by Becky — October 22, 2009 @ 1:30 pm

That’s IT! I’ve decided I MUST have BOTH a chenille bedspread AND Morgan’s haircut!

Looks like you and your family had a wonderful time and I’m jealous, but in a really good, happy-for-you-too sort of way. Tough to be back though, huh?

  • Comment by Kimberly — October 22, 2009 @ 1:58 pm

    Hi Darby,

    I have been lurking for a few months now and I just LOVE your blog. I opened this post last night and read the first few lines…took your advice and waited until I had a cup of coffee in hand to enjoy it ;) {I just wish I could have made it in that ahhhhmazing coffee pot!}

As another mother of three kiddos VERY close in age, your writing always makes me smile. Oh, and your pictures! Thank you for sharing the beautiful world through your eyes.

I don’t know about everyone else, but that looks like a little slice of Heaven, to me! What a brilliant idea – having a warm-water hose on the deck?! Love all the beautiful pics – especially the ones of the kiddos having such a blast!!

  • Comment by kat — October 22, 2009 @ 2:22 pm

That beach house is truly amazing! I would never want to leave if I stayed there. I also love beachglass, I collected half a grocery bag full of it when I was in Maine this summer and put it in a jar on the window sill at my brother-in-law’s house as a reminder of our wonderful trip. Five Guys Burgers and soooooooooo yummy and their fries are to die for. What a wonderful vacation with stunning photos you can revisit any time you like!

  • Comment by Rebecca — October 22, 2009 @ 2:50 pm

I’m pretty sure that house is a few down from ours. Ours is about 7 houses west of Pier Park. You’re so right about PCB! It’s definitely grown up a lot in the past few years and fall is the best time to visit! Glad yall had a great time!

  • Comment by Tara McClendon — October 22, 2009 @ 2:55 pm

Love it all, D! I think I’ll read it over a few more times to make sure I didn’t miss anything…and to pretend that that’s where I am right this very second! Love you!

  • Comment by caroline — October 22, 2009 @ 5:30 pm

Love it!! We just moved to Orange Beach, AL for the next 5 weeks. I was sitting on the balcony looking at the beach reading your blog. It inspired me to grab a bag and take both of the kids down to the beach. I have to admit it wasn’t easy to get a 3yr old and a 2 month old down there by myself but we enjoyed it. The weather is wonderful! I tried to get some good pics like you, but you are pretty much a professional now!! haha Love the sunset pics.

  • Comment by Adrienne — October 22, 2009 @ 7:50 pm

Your photography is so amazing, Darby! I loved seeing McBeach & the pond house from your perspective. Bill and Miki designed McBeach after Hurricane Opal destroyed their house. My favorite parts are the tower room and that the three upstairs adult bedrooms have french doors to the balcony so that you can feel the ocean breeze. It is always so wonderful there :)

Thanks again for sharing your pictures – you have such a great blog!

  • Comment by Brooke — October 22, 2009 @ 10:52 pm

How beautiful! This makes me wanna be at the beach right now. Reading this just made me imagine if my family were there now. Oh well, guess I’ll have to settle for Huntsvegas for now. :) Love this post!

Thank you for sharing the beautiful details of the beach house! And of the pond house too! Very inspiring! I think I might have to visit! We did an October vacation this year too! We went to Bayfield, WI and found it to be the best time of the year! Not too crowded, but yet still warm and gorgeous outside! Hi, I’m new here…I love each visit to your blog and have made myself at home. I recently vacationed with my family to this area. We stayed off the beach at the Marriott Bay Point Resort. It was our second visit and we loved it. In fact, if in your “spare” time (don’t choke;, I’d love for you to come by and see our pics…its an open invitation, no rush. I listed my blog in the website field, and you’ll find it in a post from Aug 15-23 or around there. I’ve just revived my blog and have rediscovered my love of writing…and a new love…photography. (Marla’s Q&A post has been a huge help already.)

I also wanted to say how sorry I am you were “busted” on the War Eagle tee shirt. I know so many people in the Mobile, AL area who monogram/embroider with college logos and trademark cheers. Hope that’s all behind you now. My husband is an Auburn man and he’d give you a big War Eagle for your effort and integrity. I go for the tigers too…but they are of the Bayou Bengal variety. We love football season and have fun cheering each other on, until we meet head to head! :D

AND I am SO jealous you found sea glass on PCB! How wonderful! I’ve spent many many days combing the beach (Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Dauphin Island, and PCB) and have never had such wonderfabulous luck! That your little girl found it for you is even more wonderful!

I look forward to future blog visits and wish you a happy labor day!

I agree, October is definitely the best time to be at the beach in Florida. It is amazing how content kids are when they are at the beach, it must be the water and the salt air that makes the difference.

I’ve been browsing on-line more than three hours today, but I by no means found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It’s lovely value sufficient for me. In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the internet shall be a lot more helpful than ever before.
