One day

One day I’ll learn to not be surprised by the things that I find…
IMG_7040
… tucked ever so carefully…
IMG_7042
… in my commode. Once I fished out the shoes and stirred things up a little I realized that in the company of the clothing, towels and shoes was also tee tee and toilet paper that was never flushed.

This takes fishing to a whole new level. Please pass the Purell and Rover, please stay out of the potties. One mention of a stinky washing machine and he resorts to washing clothes in toilet…

    Ewwwwwww!

    HOLY TOILET STUFFING
I’ve never seen anything like this. He must really think your washing machine stinks, if the toilet’s a better option for washing clothes.

  • Comment by Tracy — November 2, 2009 @ 9:56 pm

Thankful I have a girl who did not have an obsession with the potty. Made me giggle!

  • Comment by Brandi — November 2, 2009 @ 10:02 pm

THANK YOU… for a laugh before heading off to bed. :) too cute. you’ll look back and laugh, I promise.

  • Comment by jennifer little — November 2, 2009 @ 10:15 pm

This is oh so familiar. Though I have not found surpises in the toilet yet, Luke likes to splash in the toilet water any chance he can get (18 months).

Lovely over here! Enjoyed visiting and I love this post!

LOL! too funny…well from here its funny-Phoebe hasn’t pulled any stunts like this yet:-)

  • Comment by Megan Shropshire — November 2, 2009 @ 10:41 pm

Oh Darby! This makes me laugh…and reminds me of my youngest brother…who was definitely a Rover! He was obsessed with the toilet…my mom found him one time with the Dustbuster in the toilet trying to make a “coozie” which was his work for jaquzzi (sp?) b/c my parents had a big jaquzzi tub in their bathroom that he liked. Another time, my mom went to the dryer to take out a load of laundry and the dryer was empty. She thought she had lost her mind until the next day when she opened up the microwave and out poured a load of delicates! :) On the bright side…life was always entertaining and 25 years later, we’re all still laughing!

  • Comment by Katie — November 2, 2009 @ 10:49 pm

Ha! Someone was busy! It’s like the commercial for the toilet that can flush everything…

  • Comment by lauren — November 2, 2009 @ 10:51 pm

oh my goodness. that is hysterical.

  • Comment by caroline — November 2, 2009 @ 10:58 pm

Rover, that is IMPRESSIVE. I can’t believe how much stuff he had in there and it was packed so neatly! I am SO glad Julianna never had a potty fetish! haha Who know what surprises I’ll be in for with this little man as he grows up. Did you have rubber gloves to fish it all out?

  • Comment by Melissa — November 2, 2009 @ 11:05 pm

That is classic. So funny. I don’t know how you mom’s do it!! My kitty is enough work for me.

  • Comment by Hannah — November 2, 2009 @ 11:05 pm

That is …well…a little disturbing but also really, really, impressive! Gotta love little boys :)

BLESS. YOUR. HEART. That’s about all I can say . . . it looks like you have a very long road ahead of you. ;) But hey, Rover makes EXCELLENT blogging material! And he might just be the cutest little thing I have EVER seen. You can’t stay mad at him long!

  • Comment by Jennifer — November 3, 2009 @ 12:25 am

Isn’t amazing what these little guys get into? We’ve had some hand splashing in the toilet- but no items… yet! Your photos in the post below are adorable!

  • Comment by Melise — November 3, 2009 @ 12:34 am

    He is too cute.

  • Comment by Victoria — November 3, 2009 @ 7:57 am

So sorry, but as the mother of two boys, this is just the beginning! I have found my share of things in the toilet but not that many things at ONCE!

  • Comment by Jen — November 3, 2009 @ 8:03 am

Oh that makes me laugh! I think that load of laundry will smell better after your front loader gets done with it!

  • Comment by Tiffany — November 3, 2009 @ 8:15 am

Wow! That is pretty serious. He had to work at that. Impressive. : ) I will now keep all of my bathroom doors closed so as to avoid any similar stunts. My boy likes to stick his hands in the toilet and splash around but he has never tried to put anything in there. I’ll make sure he doesn’t see this post and get any bright ideas!

  • Comment by Kirbey Broome — November 3, 2009 @ 8:22 am

Oh my that’s a mess! At least it looks like your Rover will be a good organizer? Space saver? What a cute family you have!

  • Comment by stephanie — November 3, 2009 @ 8:37 am

oh my gosh……………….i’m flabberghasted!! time to bring out the potty locks!! looks like I’M definitely going to get some!

  • Comment by amanda wallace — November 3, 2009 @ 8:42 am

Ha, just the morning laugh I needed! This makes me wonder about the rest of the story that none of us will ever know – that is, “just what was going through his head?”

  • Comment by Michele — November 3, 2009 @ 8:49 am

Thank goodness the shoes were on TOP! And definitely pull out the potty lock…they are hideous, but effective:) Give a little slack in the design department to save the wardrobe!!!
Thanks for the chuckle (especially since it wasn’t my house…this time!)

Oh Darby, I laughed outloud, especially at your reference back to the washing machine! Rover is quite the character!

  • Comment by eringianni — November 3, 2009 @ 9:45 am

I die. Too funny for words. Seriously, hilarious!

  • Comment by Jacci — November 3, 2009 @ 10:08 am

    Oh, man. That’s pretty horrible.

We’ve made bathrooms “off limits” to the un-potty-trained guys – takes some training, but we’ve not had many issues with the piles of toilet paper in the hallway or things going into the potty. I think one of the potty-trianing-at-the-time children flushed some coupons once, though :)

Partly, the no bathroom access rule is for safety. Children Rover’s age still have their center of gravity in their noggins. If they start to try to climb up there and tip, their head is going to go in the bowl first and likely they can’t get out easily. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. Not trying to be downer to your *very* amusing post – hope it doesn’t come across that way.

You seem like an awesome mom – and even the most awesome moms still have kids stuff junk in the toilet or eat an entire chocolate cake in the wee hours of dawn (just sayin’).

    Warmly,
    Jacci

  • Comment by Christina — November 3, 2009 @ 10:23 am

Oh my, that is too funny! I can’t believe all of the things he stuffed in there! Thanks for the laugh this morning. I needed it after battling my 10 month old over a nap.

  • Comment by JJ — November 3, 2009 @ 10:42 am

Priceless!!! He is going to be the boy that brings home lovely things in his pockets…bugs, snakes, frogs, snails…you get the idea! You will want to throw him away some days. But, you’ll look at that precious face and think to yourself…tomorrow will be better…when you really know it will be more of the same and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • Comment by Jennifer — November 3, 2009 @ 11:10 am

Ya know what I thought when I opened this up…oooooh, cute shoes! LOL We have had to call a plumber a time or two with random objects thrown in the toilet…how lovely is that? Ahhhhhh…boys will be boys! Gotta love em… ; ) When you see things like this and you are tempted to get mad…I mean, REALLY mad… Ya just gotta remember…at least they are healthy enough to do crazy stuff like this…I am thinking about children Rover’s age with cancer and other horrible diseases… : ( At least this is what my mom tells me when I am tempted to get really upset with my little ones…

Too cute for words though, Darby…you certainly have a beautiful brood…

  • Comment by Lindsay — November 3, 2009 @ 11:36 am

Look at the bright side…the shoes were at the top! (hopefully not in the water since they don’t wash as easily as the clothes?!) Thanks for the laugh!

  • Comment by Ashley — November 3, 2009 @ 11:37 am

    OH NO!
This made me want to laugh, this made me want to cry! He was busy!

  • Comment by Tonia — November 3, 2009 @ 12:09 pm

At least your very cute shoes were on top and not the bottom of the load.

  • Comment by Leigh-Ann — November 3, 2009 @ 12:25 pm

Just think of all those jewels in your crown you’re adding to each day with Rover! I know….I have many from my Marybeth aka wildcat!

  • Comment by Victoria — November 3, 2009 @ 1:00 pm

Oh my, these are the days of Motherhood, aren’t they? I can see you now telling his fiancee all about this episode. ;)

  • Comment by alston — November 3, 2009 @ 1:24 pm

that is hilarious!! Although, I know it’s not funny when you are cleaning it out! I’ve heard that stuffing things in the potty is mainly a boy thing? Henry dropped our friend’s cordless phone in their potty when he was 1.5 yrs old — he was just standing over it giggling!

  • Comment by Brittan — November 3, 2009 @ 2:21 pm

Ha!! That’s too funny…One day about 6 months ago I head West ( will be 2 in two weeks) say “uh oh!” and then heard the potty flush…At first it was ok, so someone pooped in the potty later and of course then it overflowed..My poor husband had to come home, deal with the poop and take the WHOLE TOLIET off of the floor to get the train out- these boys are rovers but the most precious there are! I love mine more than life itself!

  • Comment by Amanda — November 3, 2009 @ 2:36 pm

Too funny (and kinda gross too)! Apparently my older brother flushed one of my mom’s watches down the toilet back in the day. Maybe you should hide any jewelry you don’t want to lose! :)

  • Comment by Tyne — November 3, 2009 @ 2:48 pm

    too funny, darby!

  • Comment by Abby Maddox — November 3, 2009 @ 2:55 pm

  • Comment by Jenna — November 3, 2009 @ 3:56 pm

  • Comment by Karen — November 3, 2009 @ 4:30 pm

Oh my goodness! And those shoes look cute and new, hope you were able to salvage??
And I can’t believe once you found this you weren’t so upset that you immediately took everything out, but you got your camera instead. You must’ve laughed about the entire situation instead!

  • Comment by Amanda @ Serenity Now — November 3, 2009 @ 4:39 pm

Haha…I knew exactly what that was when I saw it…my toddler wasn’t so creative when I wrote this post:
    http://serenitynow4amanda.blogspot.com/2009/05/why-i-love-toddlers.html

    :)

  • Comment by kat — November 3, 2009 @ 4:52 pm

Yikes! Are those shoes suede? Don’t you just love surprises like this? Instead of handwashing… those clothing items must have had “toilet washing” in the label.

  • Comment by Laura — November 3, 2009 @ 4:59 pm

Too funny. I’m imagining how much thought and time probably went into stuffing the things in there just right!

  • Comment by Heidi — November 3, 2009 @ 5:28 pm

Thanks for sharing your hilarious post. It made my day. I have a 3-year-old son named Ryder who’s so similar, and some days I wonder how I’m going to survive. It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone! Ryder usually tosses everything in the trash can…utensils, toys, dishes, you name it. We always figure that if we can’t find something, it probably ended up in the round file! Keep up the fabulous blog!

  • Comment by Kristen — November 3, 2009 @ 6:20 pm

Oh my word! I am pretty sure he could give Owen a run for her money! And that’s saying alot!:) Thanks for the laugh!

  • Comment by Laura Zarrin — November 3, 2009 @ 6:33 pm

Oh wow! Gross! He’s really something, isn’t he?

  • Comment by Becky — November 3, 2009 @ 6:34 pm

oh darby. oh bless you mama. that is a day that is not fun. while i have found myself completely speechless lately, i’m glad this is not my reason why. you dear, deserve a coffee from somewhere someone else makes it for you. or an adult beverage. sounds like a good day for some of that alone time we talked about!

  • Comment by misc.alaina — November 3, 2009 @ 8:29 pm

I love it! You have a funny little man there! Just add this to your collection of stories and memories you will tell when he is older. My brother and husband both have their own collections. Boys!

  • Comment by Christie — November 3, 2009 @ 8:54 pm

Oh my gosh! That is a new one!! And the tee tee and toilet paper left in the potty because little children can’t remember to flush? Happens at my house all the time!

  • Comment by Amber — November 3, 2009 @ 9:42 pm

My jaw literally just dropped. I thought my day was kinda rough, but I’m sending my prayers your way now!

  • Comment by Abby Maddox — November 4, 2009 @ 7:19 am

Have I already commented on this one? I can’t remember (sort of frightening). I was just wondering if you took everything out, deep cleaned your toilet and grout, and then stuffed everything back in? Otherwise, I stand in awe of the state of your bathroom :)

  • Comment by ScatteringLupines — November 4, 2009 @ 7:49 am

If it’s POSSIBLE to have a favorite post from your blog, THIS IS IT FOR ME!

  • Comment by Rali — November 4, 2009 @ 10:01 am

Darby, I love your blog but I have never commented before. When I saw this post yesterday I thought to myself “Oh, this is something my 19-month old boy has never done, though he is very much like yoru Rover”. And then I go home from work and the moment I open the door I hear my husband yelling “Oh No, Michael just stuffed all the clothes in the toilet!” I just could not believe that this happened to me in the same day I read your post. I am wondering if my little boy had secretly read your blog and got that idea from Rover. Too funny :)

  • Comment by Meredith — November 4, 2009 @ 10:09 am

oh darby!! how are you surviving with this little boy after having two girls?!??! it really is a whole new world, huh? as I have heard said before there is a speacial place in heaven for mamas of boys!! too funny!! thanks for sharing :)

  • Comment by Robyn — November 5, 2009 @ 12:55 pm

LOL! I’m sorry for your very nasty surprise but this did make me laugh! I’d say these photos are ones for the baby book! That Rover, he’s a clever little lad!

  • Comment by beki — November 5, 2009 @ 2:23 pm

I would not be one bit surprised to find something like this at my house. I just discovered that Ava colored the cat with a marker. Need I say more?

  • Comment by Denise — November 6, 2009 @ 8:49 pm

Avid reader, first time commenter. This is too funny. Have you ever considered replacing your toilet with a Toto, which claims to flush a bucket of golf balls without hick-upping! Wouldn’t Rover love to put it to a test!!

  • Comment by Kitty Hurdle — November 6, 2009 @ 11:28 pm

    You are one brave momma!

  • Comment by Megan — November 9, 2009 @ 1:41 am

Oh this looks like the works of my Hallie… who has a obsession with the toilet. I have found her several times dipping her teacup in there & drinking the toilet water!

  • Comment by Adelia — November 10, 2009 @ 10:08 am

It’s just nice to know that there are other moms out in the world with days like this…

I just found your blog from The 12 Days of Christmas post at life in Grace…loved the tags…I actually MADE them…woohoo…anyway…this is one of the funniest posts…at least to a momma….I can so empathize…wow…A lot of stuff in that potty…sorry about the other…
