Fly Through Our Window

We had a great weekend and I hope you did too.  Justin had to get under the kitchen sink to install a new faucet on Saturday and while he worked he got a little taste of why I tell him it’s a major accomplishment if I ever complete any task on any given day.

daddyshelpers

Today was good in an “average Monday” sort of way… I drank coffee and worked on emails*.

me_computer

And them moved on to laundry…
me_washingmachine

And then started to make 5 boxes of cornbread for the Rescue Mission…
me_cornbread

But realized first, I needed to do dishes, so I did…
me_dishes

Then I made the cornbread…
me_cornbreadbowl

Then all I wanted to do was put my feet up and drink a Diet Coke…
me_dc

But it didn’t last long because I remembered my hair…
me_hairbrush

Oh, and how could I forget, all of the above took place with the “help” of 3 little precious rovers! And… I’m still brushing it as I type {because the brush is still stuck}… I’ll be sure to let you know how it looks when I’m finished. I really wish my cousin was here, I need a miracle worker.

And my husband has already called the psych ward to let them know I’ll be in as soon as I wrap up this post.

Actually, after I spent some time photographing Darby Doll and laughing my rear off I made egg salad because it’s Morgan’s absolute favorite. My recipe is really easy and not at all calculated… but oh so good! {if you like egg  salad}

Take some hard-boiled eggs.

eggsalad1

And roughly chop them.

eggsalad2

Grab some: mayo, yellow mustard, & dill relish.

eggsalad4

Then add 1 “plop” of mayo, 1 squirt of mustard, and 1 squirt of relish… then stir really good, the larger egg chunks will mash into smaller egg chunks.

eggsalad3

Then, if you’re feeling crazy {which OBVIOUSLY I was today} you can add a little Jane’s Krazy Salt {it’s been a LONG time since I’ve mentioned her but my love for her is still the same}.

eggsalad5

Trust me when I say it’s not as pretty all mixed up, so I won’t share a picture,  just take my word for it that it’s delicious.

But I do have to add this warning… if you make it and proceed to pick up your 5 year old from preschool and bring her home for a tasty egg salad sandwich she’ll likely walk in the house and exclaim, “Momma… our house smells like DOG TOOTS!”

*emails: I’m still trying to get my email accounts under control. Over the weekend I switched to a new server/hosting {I don’t know the terminology– thankfully, Chris does!} and in the process, for a few hours, my email account was down. If you sent an email that was returned ‘undeliverable’ over the weekend you can send it now and it should come through!

I’ll be back soon with more a more “substantial” post… but I can’t promise that I’m done with Darby Doll… she provides me so much comic relief. Even if it is at the expense of the children & Justin thinking Mommy’s going crazy!!

xoxo Darby Doll

Hi Darby! I have been following your blog for a little while but have not commented yet, but after this post I just had to! This sounds like a day in our house as well (I have a 6 year old, 5 year old and 3 year old). My husband often comes home to find me laughing hysterically at something that he just thinks is plain crazy. Thank you for taking the time to share how God is working in your life (He teaches me so many things through my children!) and for making us mothers out here reading not feel so crazy! :) God has used you to inspire me, encourage me, and help me laugh more at the blessings of motherhood.

if it’s any consolation – the “real” Darby’s hair does not look like that – but you are cute as a button like darby doll – the whole family is!!

I wonder if there’s a market out there for an entire family of models?? Y’all could do it!

  • Comment by Becky M. — February 2, 2010 @ 12:24 am

I am feeling you today. I felt so guilty this evening after we put the kids to bed. I just sat down on the couch and zoned out on the computer. Poor husband. Sorry, not enough mental energy to be married and carry on a conversation today. lol. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

  • Comment by sherry — February 2, 2010 @ 12:53 am

I found you through your sisters blog…btw, yours is the only one I read that isn’t about interior design. I like that you write about real life even though I love the design blogs. This post reminds me of my world! Five kids and running a business from home while still trying to be a Martha Stewart keeps me laughing, everyone thinks I have lost it but I don’t care! I tell them if I weren’t laughing I would go crazy! My husband recently stayed home for three weeks to help me while I recovered from surgery and he couldn’t believe the chaos that goes on…he said that not only can he not do what I do but that he doesn’t want to! Thanks for the blog and the laughs! BTW I just finished reading your sisters blog with the post for designers funny stories so I am sure my husband is wondering what I am doing on the computer!!

  • Comment by Jenn — February 2, 2010 @ 12:58 am

I am down to only one ‘child’ now and that’s my hubs! And believe me, you can’t change a 62 year old! LOL Your egg pics are absolutely beautiful! I got a 50mm f/1.4G (Nikon camera) and am loving it, although I still have a way to go comprehending the aperature, shutter, etc. The reflection on the counter is amazing! Are you going to Blissdom ’10? I would have loved to have gone but would be so lost. I’m still sort of new to all this blogging stuff! I would love to sit and talk with you and Edie from Life in Grace. You sound like my kind of girls!

Well this is my day for today….need to clean , need to iron and finish my carnival dress.
See you soon little Doll Darby

  • Comment by Katharina — February 2, 2010 @ 2:29 am

I think the idea and the pictures are awesome!

It reminds me of something I found in the internet yesterday:
A gnome that was stolen from a neighbors garden and was taken on a world trip. If you dont have time to read… just take a look at the photos – they are so funny, too.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2543264/Telegraph-solves-the-mystery-of-the-travelling-Gnome.html

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1043552/Gnome-Stolen-garden-elf-returned-7-month-adventure-world.html

Maybe DarbyDoll will dream of switching a day with the gnome and go to a beach in Thailand or New Zealand instead of doing the dishes and laundry!

you have no idea how much you cheered me up today I think Darby doll has a great future and could be the new BARBIE she is much more true to life

  • Comment by Christy — February 2, 2010 @ 1:44 pm

I read often, but rarely comment, but I couldn’t not comment today! :) Must. Keep. Darby. Doll. These pics were just too funny! I would be totally laughing my head off taking the pics & then posting them. Love it! I think you should keep her for yourself & get the girls a new doll. :)

I love the one of “you” typing with the brush in the hair… I think they’re hilarious and I want to see more!

  • Comment by Lori — February 2, 2010 @ 1:51 pm

I don’t know what was funnier the darby doll or the comment by your 5 year old about the egg salad sandwich. Yes, I too love it egg salad- but I also get a lot of heck about the smell. Pioneerwoman turned me onto Hellman’s mayonaise – you ought to try it – i’ll never buy kraft mayo again!

  • Comment by Melise — February 2, 2010 @ 2:20 pm

Hysterical! I loved it all but I think the one of Justin with the kids all piled on top of him while he tried to work is the BEST! I tell my hubby that all the time and I only have 1!!!

  • Comment by Lee-Anne Fenwick — February 2, 2010 @ 2:24 pm

I Really, Really, REALLY needed a good laugh today!!!!!! Boy did you bring it…very impressive that you can make time to take your doll around the house, take and edit photos AND be the supermom and wife that you are. I need lessons. My blog is suffering these days – I have hopes to get to it, then before you know it, well, it’s been a week or two and I have nothing posted.
    Much love!

  • Comment by Jen — February 2, 2010 @ 2:37 pm

  • Comment by May — February 2, 2010 @ 2:46 pm

Oh, please, please keep the doll pictures coming – they are so funny!!

  • Comment by Tara — February 2, 2010 @ 2:49 pm

I love the Darby Doll! Did anyone call you that growing up? My kids wouldn’t eat an egg if their lives depended on it, so I forgot egg salad sandwiches even eggsisted. Um ummm…I will have to stink up the house tonight (good thing we have a new puppy, no one will even notice the salad)

  • Comment by Michele — February 2, 2010 @ 3:32 pm

Favorite post on this blog. Ever! It reminds me of the book “The Lonely Doll”, which is one of my all-time favorites. Edith had much better hair than Darby Doll, sorry to say.

    I agree…… BEST. POST. EVER.

Question: did you use the self-timer to take the self-portraits? I kid, I kid. Darby Doll is *almost* as adorable as you!

LOL @ “Momma… our house smells like DOG TOOTS!”. My husband says the same thing when I make egg salad.

Darby- I just love your blog! I happened to stumble on it looking for an ice box cake recipe the other day, of all things. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you I love all your renovation ideas! You are so creative, and thanks for the laugh today with the Darby doll.

  • Comment by Cousin — February 3, 2010 @ 12:26 pm

DD- I was showing the salon girls your blog last night at work and it may take all of us to tackle Darby Dolls hair;) I wish I was there with you all! Miss you and love you!

  • Comment by Meg — February 3, 2010 @ 5:07 pm

Darby, I am laughing so hard. I love it. Please do not let Justin send you off just yet to the loony bin. I am really looking forward to some more Darby Doll photo shoots. What will she accomplish next? Perhaps some sewing, yard work, or maybe even some driving to get chillens at preschool. Oh, all the wonderful possibilities. You know, whatever helps you get through the day. Hehe. Love it. Meg

I just came across your site and I love it. I also have two daughters and a son. I have read your blog and it brings back so many memories. Your site is cute as are your children and it is also fun to read. It is not just on one subject so it keeps a person interested. I see the picture of the little boy running outside in his underpants and I could not believe the memories that it brought back of my now 24 year old son. I will pass your site on to my daughters. Thank you

  • Comment by bonnie — February 4, 2010 @ 12:59 pm

Darby, I think you could benefit from a stay at the American Girl Doll Hospital. They also do hair! You make egg salad like a true southerner. My midwest friends are great but they don’t put sweet pickle relish in their egg salad. Not as good!

  • Comment by Mimi — February 4, 2010 @ 4:39 pm

Thanks for making me laugh today at work!

  • Comment by Katie — February 5, 2010 @ 11:14 am
