Mornin’ Rovers!
It’s been a busy week and after several late nights I crashed at 8:32 pm last night. Which is so very geriatric of me… but according to my sister, I am SO very geriatric. I don’t know too many “mature adults” with “i love trash” tattoos but that’s another story! {She better be glad I love her as much as I do!!}
A few months ago Bailey at Peppermint Bliss asked me if I’d do a blog interview. The interview included questions about clothes. Which always sends me into a panic. I like clothes but I don’t really buy clothes, I just get all of Erika’s and rely heavily on my her to tell me if something looks good or not. If you recall in my “oops-I-posted-a-gmail-chat-that-I-wasn’t supposed-post” my conversation with my sister went something like this…
me: Would you please look at these clothing selections for Peppermint Bliss?
Erika: Hang on peppermint patty this is so hilarious… yada yada yada
me: Will you please approve my selections?
Erika: blabber blabber blabber
me: Will you please look at what I’ve picked?
Erika: blabber blabber blabber
{several weeks pass– she NEVER reviews my selections}
The interview post went up this week.
And then yesterday she emails me this…
Darby, that brown tankini on peppermint bliss killed me. IΒ should have stopped you on that thing – that looks like a maternity swimsuit or geriatric.Β I should have previewed that.Β The green dress is fine, but that swimsuit is hilarious.Β People are going to think you are an Amish Mennonite.
So I chatted her up…
I do have 2 piece swim suits that I will not wear in public! π I call them backyard bathing suits. Hello, mothers– I know you do the same thing! And I know if you’ve had 3 kids you think that brown tankini is super cute!!
In other news, I’m going away this weekend by myself.
And could y’all pray for my husband while I’m away?
natalie @ this old southern house
April 22, 2010 at 9:05 amgirl, you make me laugh outloud! my mary margaret has recently gotten interested in her poop…especially when she does #2 in the tub like 3-4 nights/week–what is up with THAT?!
and yes, we all have those swimsuits. my parents have a pool so if i know no one is going to see me…oh lord, it’s not pretty! haha! {i think yours is cute, by the way}
Kelsey
April 22, 2010 at 9:09 amHahaha! I totally HAVE that swimming suit in black! I bought it as my “post-partum” swimsuit and wore it in Mexico just a few weeks ago. It was totally adorable with fabulous black sunglasses and a giant straw hat. Very Audrey Hepburn in my opinion. π BUT, I did wear it knowing that my girlfriends in their adorable bikinis wouldn’t understand the whole c-section-scar-saggy-boobs-and-stretch-marks problem. I can be geriatric at 28 and PROUD of it!
beth
April 22, 2010 at 9:09 amok, so I am not a mom yet, but found the BEST tankinis!! They don’t meet your bathing suit bottoms, so they still look slightly “sexy”…I guess as sexy as old navy can be π I bought 3 with different fun printed bottoms!
https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=54744&vid=1&pid=748641&scid=748641042
I even blogged about them bc I liked them so much! My husband didn’t even complain that I was looking prudish π
Abby Maddox
April 22, 2010 at 9:12 amMainly I love that last picture! I feel like Justin is more distressed about the fact that there is an American Girl doll…posing as his wife, carressing his back. Bout to email you back. sorry for the lateness
Lauren
April 22, 2010 at 9:15 amI hate wet loose swimsuit material on my stomach too! I bought a tankini when I was pregnant and wore it once and couldn’t handle the feeling anymore after that. So, I just didn’t hang out by the pool anymore. π
paige
April 22, 2010 at 9:15 amoh good lord , that is hysterical!
& if i looked anything like you two i’d totally be sporting some cute bikini ( that didnt’ stick to my tummy ) and not the skirted mom suit from lands end …in black of course…sigh
& obviously I am the matriarch ( did i spell that correctly) of this road trip so bring enough geritol for me cute darby!
Abby Maddox
April 22, 2010 at 9:15 amAnd BTW, I’m with Erika on the swimsuit issue, but I also take my child to see stripper movies, so I’m not sure you should listen to me π I say we aren’t old, so I don’t won’t to act old yet…even if I do have two kids! So I wear my bikini to the pool, and I’m just very careful to squat to check on my children and not bend forward so that the loose skin pooch on my stomach doesn’t send everyone running away to hurl.
Stacy
April 22, 2010 at 9:17 amThat tankini is absolutely perfect for any mom…far from Amish or Geriatric. In fact, the one that I just ordered is not nearly as cute and now I’m afraid I’m going to look like a Golden Girl on the beach!
Cat Moore
April 22, 2010 at 9:19 amOH. MY. Goodness. That is the funniest thing EVER! Hey, I too have a black tankini and I think it’s great for mom’s! And I also have that dress you posted….in black. (if it’s from Target, if not, then I have something very similar). Your chats sound just like my chats with my sister. Aren’t sisters great…especially the ones you can have all sorts of inside jokes and be BFF’s. Also, so wish I still lived in Birmingham. Miss it alot. tear, sniff sniff. Have fun! And could you please pick me up a dozen cinnamon crunch bagels with hazelnut cream cheese at Panera Bread??? π
Cat Moore
April 22, 2010 at 9:20 am…my comment wasn’t finished….
I don’t have Panera in Jackson. another tear, sniff sniff
Jennifer @ a Fine Romance
April 22, 2010 at 9:20 amI am seriously rolling on the floor with laughter at that last pic of Darby doll and hubby. HIL-AR!!!! You crack me up, girl.
Jennifer
April 22, 2010 at 9:24 amHilarious! The bathing suit thing is SO something only moms understand, and don’t worry, you’re not the only one who runs all of their fashion choices by their sister. My sister just happens to work in fashion in NYC and thinks what I consider stylish functional mom clothes are hysterical π
Samma
April 22, 2010 at 9:29 amI think the suit is cute! I don’t have kids yet, but sometimes I like to drink a beer and eat some carbs in a two piece without having to study the increasing poochiness of my tummy.
Caroline @ The Feminist Housewife
April 22, 2010 at 9:30 amAhh! You made my morning.
I feel quite geriatric when shopping for shorts these days. Nothing works. I wrote a post about it (with wedgie shots) not too long ago..
https://davidandcarolineparker.blogspot.com/2010/04/wedgies-onesies-and-clothes-falling-off.html
Enjoy your weekend away! Hope you have a fabulous time!
Kate
April 22, 2010 at 9:33 amHilarious! The last picture is too funny!
What are you coming to town for? Magic City Art Connection? Make sure you go if you can. It’s great!
beckyBrodbeck
April 22, 2010 at 9:42 amToo funny! I laughed out loud at Erika’s post a couple days ago and did again today at yours. Thank you! I needed to laugh! That picture and comment on Justin’s picture is just too funny!! Love you-Hey, we are planning on being in Marianna in June, would love to see you somehow, on our drive through???
MommaRa
April 22, 2010 at 9:42 amHahaha how on earth did you convince your husband to take that picture! So cute and have fun this weekend. π
Cath
April 22, 2010 at 9:43 amLOL Darby, I will preface this comment by asking if the above conversation was or was not to be posted to the blog. Yes I was one who caught the last oops post and my lips are sealed.
I can totally related to the “home” swim wear. Hey the fam sees us at the crack of dawn I figure swim wear of any age is like being dressed up!
Have a great trip.
Kate
April 22, 2010 at 9:51 amOh my goodness, I have had the most stressful week and this made me laugh out loud. Thank you, Darby, for being so stinkin’ funny. And thank God for sisters!
jo
April 22, 2010 at 9:51 amso for future reference, using wipes to get poop out of my son’s hair will not work??? for real? what if i just let it sit for a while and then just scrape it out π
you are hilarious!
Meredith
April 22, 2010 at 9:53 amFunny post! I haven’t worn a bikini since I had my daughter 3 years ago. Tankinis are a must for me!
Ashley
April 22, 2010 at 9:53 amHaha! Too funny! I just bought two tankinis, one in a fun print from Old Navy and a boring navy one at J.Crew. Though I’m not pregnant nor have children yet, I do have extra fluff that needs covered up. While you’re here in Birmingham be sure to check out the Pepper Place Market that opens up this weekend and the Magic City Art Connection. Have a great trip!
Melise
April 22, 2010 at 10:00 amLMAO!! My sister and I are SO much like yall! And…. I have that SAME suit in black too and I LOVE it! I totally thought it was stylish and cute! (Target right?) Have fun in B’ham, hope you don’t come home to dried poop in the hair! {that’s exactly what my hubby would do! If you’re like me you get some sort of weird pleasure in leaving him with the kid/s overnight just so he can ‘see’ a little taste of what you do all day? He always appreciates me more!}
Lindsay
April 22, 2010 at 10:01 amI have a bathing suit almost exactly like that in pink! I try to do the public a favor by leaving the pre-baby bikini at home!
rachel
April 22, 2010 at 10:06 ami have a tankini, too- slightly different style, but same basic thing! i’ll say this: i much prefer to be geriatric than to be one of those moms with a huge, flappy, stretch marked sag of skin hanging out of a bikini! at least mine is covered up! ha! : )
Katie
April 22, 2010 at 10:11 amHahaha — so much to comment on….Darby doll…the last one…hahahahaha! OKay, I liked the tankini–and I too have backyard ‘kinis. And I even have one (a string bikini) that I wore during both pregnancies (in the last trimester, no less) (and I should mention I gained 70 pounds … EACH time) … only in the backyard though, of course. I may be a white trash sometimes, but not that bad. It’s a wonder that just didn’t kill the romance between me and the hubs… OH! McBeach looks awesome! Calling my name…
Kaylene
April 22, 2010 at 10:17 amokay… I’m only 26 with no kids and I would totally wear that bathing suit! I think it’s cute! I don’t do bikinis. I just don’t. Not comfortable in them at all. Maybe if I lost a few pounds but I wasn’t even that comfortable in them when I was rail-thin.
Ashley
April 22, 2010 at 10:19 amThis is hilarious. And, I love Justin’s face in the last picture. That is SO my husband – I will say or do things, and he just shakes his head. I guess he’s stuck w/ me!!! You guys make me want Kate to have a sister – or better yet, how bout the Lord just hand me w/ TWINS this next go around??! I’ll take it π
elizabeth
April 22, 2010 at 10:20 amIf I were built like you, especially after having 3 kids, I wouldn’t be wearing a tankini. I like the bathing suits from Lands End. THey have cute tankinis. Oh, and the green dress you posted….I bought that about a month ago and still haven’t worn it. I love the color though.
Enjoy your time away!

April 22, 2010 at 10:29 amOh my gosh…I almost spit my diet coke all over my laptop. You two are sooo funny! Y’all always crack me up! Thanks for the laugh!

April 22, 2010 at 10:43 amDarby,
This is so funny. I think the bathing suit is cute. However, I bet you could sport a bikini and be just fine!
Your conversation with Erika sounds just like my sister and I. I would be you in the convo and my sister would be Erika.

April 22, 2010 at 10:54 amOh girl, you are killing me! This is my first post on your blog, but I’ve been reading and laughing for a couple months now. First, love the pic of your daughter (is she a rager or a rover?) and I totally agree with the material on your belly thing…and I’m a former swimmer! Not the same when it’s loose on the momma belly! Enjoy your weekend away…gonna plan something for myself too and I don’t have to worry about poop in hair anymore. That too shall pass! π
Ashley
April 22, 2010 at 11:02 amOh my gosh… I LOVE that swimsuit! In fact, I just went online to order it for myself! It’s not geriatric at all. It’s modest but adorable at the same time. Perfect! π
alison g. (brazil)
April 22, 2010 at 11:14 amDarby – I don’t have too much blog stalking time these days, with the arrival of our newest rover, but your posts (esp. those like this) are a CANNOT MISS in my daily routine of unwashed hair and engorged boobs! Thanks!! π

April 22, 2010 at 11:46 ami’m sorry you have such a mean sister. just wait till she has a few more kids, she can join the geriatric club. my friend and i call it the bm club because geriatrics all like to talk about their bms.
i can’t help but love the conversations you have with her. ya’ll are hilarious together.

April 22, 2010 at 12:01 pmso funny. thanks for the follow up on the online story. I was wondering if she ever looked at your clothes:)

April 22, 2010 at 12:11 pmhilarious. love it when you bring the doll to your posts. also love when said doll lays hands on hubby and prays. also love listening to the sisterly dialogue.
Sara D.
April 22, 2010 at 12:39 pmOkay, I am with you on both choices. I actually own that dress, in that color from Target and I would wear it 24-hours a day if that wasn’t considered weird.
The bathing suit. I purchased it in February, because I thought it looked cute, and would possibly be a new style for me. I’ve had 4 kids in 3 years (one set of twins), so I TOTALLY get it. I showed hubs the suit and he was sort of taken aback. Similar reaction to your sister, only he said he was witholding final judgement until I tried it on. That didn’t work either, and I promptly returned it. He so rarely tells me that he doesn’t like anything, and I was asking for his honest opinion, so that was all the convincing I needed!! But I’m with you–I saw it and thought it looked like a fun option for a mom suit!!!
All that being said…I can’t imagine that you aren’t cute in that bathing suit. You are darn cute in everything!
lynn
April 22, 2010 at 12:41 pmAre you kidding me!? That suit is ADORABLE. I want it. In black AND in polka dots. And red if it’s available. The green dress is..eh..fine..but that suit is FABULOUS! Very fun & retro!
Emily
April 22, 2010 at 12:43 pmThe tankini in black is totally different than it would be in the brown as shown on the website! Besides, anyone who reads your blog knows how stylish and un-geriatric and anything other than prudish (um, need anyone mention the tatoo(s)?) you are! So happy to see I’m not the only blog-stalker!
Kristen
April 22, 2010 at 12:43 pmOh my gosh!! I am literally laughing out loud at this post. Hilarious. Geriatric, hehe. And Darby doll doing 50 in a 65!! LOL. Good stuff Darby. Have a good trip this weekend! Sounds fun. And seriously, if I was your size, I would be strutting around in bikinis!!
Laura
April 22, 2010 at 12:49 pmDarby, you leaving me laughing again! Love your post, your interview, your dialogue with Erika, and Darby Doll! I think the swimsuit is cute but must say if I had your body I’d be wearing the bikini! I love the dress and a bargain so it may just have to find it’s way to my closet.
Lee-Anne Fenwick
April 22, 2010 at 12:51 pmOK, I totally hve to admit that, turning 35 this year, A LOT has changed and I am well on my way to the geriatric dept of swimsuits MUCH sooner than expected L( That said, Target has this new line if swimwear in the JUNIOR dept that is ADORABLE and very modest!! It’s a 1 piece with a schrouched middle section and a short attached flirty skirt (very short). It’s actually very cute and flattering….I got one in black. Again, the whole suit with skirt attached is “old” in my book – but this is FUN and modest and good for chasing 2 two year olds around the pool this summer….that is, if we make it there in one piece.

April 22, 2010 at 1:00 pmThe Darby doll simply cracks me up! You are just precious! And, tankinis can be cool–especially if you’re trying to play frisbee on the beach…you don’t have to tug at the swimsuit when you run!
Have fun in B’ham!
Hugs!

April 22, 2010 at 1:19 pmAdmit it. You wear your long dresses with tennis shoes and your hair in a covered bun all the time…
So funny!

April 22, 2010 at 1:24 pmYesterday, I was sitting in the carpool line at school playing with my face like I always do while reading a magazine and I realized something stunk. Further inspection of my hands told me it wasn’t my toddler in the back seat. I had poop under my thumbnail. And yes, I washed my dang hands after I changed the Hobbit. I don’t know how it happened.
I don’t know how to get poop out from under the thumbnail.
Apparently not with a wipe.
PS. My bathing suit is a moo-moo. And I know that’s not how you spell it.
Amber E
April 22, 2010 at 1:33 pmI have that tankini AND that green dress! I guess Erika approves of one, so I’m 50% stylish π haha. I really like the tankini, but in her defense, it really does need to be altered about 3 inches. I can’t stand how long the top is, very……..GERIATRIC! haha
Sarah
April 22, 2010 at 2:03 pmFUNNY!!!!! Ok so I love the bathing suit too and maybe it’s because I have three little rovers too:) Can I say PRACTICAL!!! And the picture of baby with your husband is too funny for words. I can only imagine what he was thinking when you snapped that. Love love love your blog and I’m super afraid your going to be the next Pioneer Woman and I’ll tell my friends that I’ve been reading you forever and they’ll be like no way you just jumped on the FTOW band wagon because everyone else is reading. You are so funny. Come hang out in VA sometime and we can go dig through other peoples trash:) Have fun this weekend!!!!!
Sally
April 22, 2010 at 2:06 pmI have a funny bathing suit story! After two kids, I’m with you on the tankinis…I am also not great with fashion and rely heavily on friends opinions on clothes. A couple summers ago I was out shopping alone and bought a floral number…my hubby told me it looked granny-ish but I told him that it was cheap and comfortable so I didn’t care what HE thought it looked like! Well, a few weeks later we are sitting on the beach and Justin starts dying laughing. He points. I look. There is a lady shuffling down the beach with MY suit on! Darby, I swear she was 90. Hilarious!
Jenn
April 22, 2010 at 2:08 pmI personally think it’s a cute bathing suit. A mom’s got to do what a mom’s got to do. Hang tough…and have a great weekend!

April 22, 2010 at 4:43 pmHi Darby!
I like that swimsuit—and I’m 22, a newlywed and have no children! But, partially because of looking at your blog, I now want children. Your family is so precious…and I hope you don’t think this is creepy, but I just want to hug John Martin! Sweet little thing!
Anyway, I have to wait until my husband is out of dental school before having kids…that’s 4 years. Here’s to hoping I make it that long! haha.

April 22, 2010 at 4:44 pmHAHAHA! Thanks for a good afternoon laugh!!! SO FUNNY!

April 22, 2010 at 5:38 pmthat last picture is the funniest thing i’ve seen in awhile. i think he’s probably more worried that he’s posing with darby doll on his back than actually having to take care of the children solo all weekend. hope you have a blast!
Ashley
April 22, 2010 at 5:49 pmThat was HILARIOUS!!! Especially the picture of Justin/Darby doll! Oh and Darby, I’m a 21 yr-old very cool, very normal (non-prude) college student.. when I clicked on the link after reading what Erika said about the bathing suit, I was prepared to be horrified but it is not that bad! For a modest tankini, it is really cute! She’s crazy :p
Leslie
April 22, 2010 at 6:16 pmHi Darby! I’ve been following your blog for a long time now, but I’ve never left a comment. I guess that makes me a blog stalker! I just wanted to say that I love that swimsuit. I actually found it on Target.com and planned on buying it as well! Your family is beautiful and I look forward to your posts!

April 22, 2010 at 6:24 pmI saw your ‘Darby doll’ pictures this morning on Flickr and was eagerly awaiting this post – you (and Erika) always make me smile!
Oh, and I like your tankini – It’s cute π

April 22, 2010 at 6:38 pmDarby, if it makes you feel any better I’m 23 and love that bathing suit! You have to wear them if you lead Young Life and hang out at camps with high schoolers all the time! π So cute. I kind of want it.

April 22, 2010 at 9:20 pmHave a great well earned weekend! Darby doll has ya covered! I think you can pull off the 2 piece outside of the backyard! lol! The suit is cute, my sister would love it….I am a bit more Erika and would say, c’mon, were young enough, grab your bikini!

April 22, 2010 at 9:23 pmI’m cracking up. Darby doll is just about my fave! You have a great trip. Thanks for the time you spend giving us encouragement and entertainment. It’s terrific. And I don’t think that suit is geriatric! It’s adorable. …but, I am a mom. Another question..did you make a cover for your middle carseat? I’m just curious. I’ve made covers for office chairs – making up my own, but wondered if you’d made something and found a great pattern. A friend is moving into a marvelous 70s era home and I’m helping with the redo. Your reno pics will be high on our inspiration list!

April 22, 2010 at 9:47 pmY’all crack me up! I almost wet my pants…the tankini is not bad…I am a one-piece girl, always have been & my BFF calls me bathing suits “swim team” bathing suits & she thinks I am such a prude! Thanks for a much needed laugh after a stressful 2 days….have a great weekend – you deserve it.

April 22, 2010 at 11:29 pmLOL LOL this was TOO funny!! And yes, I have “home” bathing suits that I garden in my BACK YARD in, lol. And then I have “out” bathing suits that cover me from my neck to my knees! π
Have fun on your trip! I never realized your in Alabama (I’m a little slow, lol) my cousin owns two toy stores (Learning Express) in Birmingham. My aunt and uncle, cousin her hubby and family live in Scottsboro. Small world π

April 23, 2010 at 7:52 amOkay is there a link to the suit that I missed? I texted my sister pictures of me trying on dresses in the fitting room and one reply I got was, “NO, old lady grunt!!” LOL. Love your blog, your cracking me up!!

April 23, 2010 at 8:48 amOh Darby, I almost wet myself reading this one lol!! I am sorry though, I have to side with Erika on the bathing suit! I only wear tankinis now (after 2 kids)…but I can’t do the ones with a loose, longer top. I have to have a tighter fitting (hate the loose wet material too!), shorter (a tiny bit of skin showing so I don’t feel to geriatric) and more support for the girls! I’m sure you look adorable in it though. Good for you for getting away…have fun!!
Katie
April 23, 2010 at 9:48 amBah! Y’all are hilarious!!

April 23, 2010 at 10:51 amDarby and sex kitten go hand and hand. That goes without saying. When I want something a little edgy I always go to D! Love you D-doll. The suit is cute, but you’re the size of a 14 year old and can totally get away with something a little less “Little House On the Prarie.” Sorry, Darb, I’m with Brookie:) I love you though.
rhonda
April 24, 2010 at 5:30 pmDarby, I have to agree that the tankini is cute. I think the difference is that Erika has a NON-mobile baby and you have three VERY mobile rovers. As I found from our latest trip to the beach, what used to be sitting and relaxing is now constant movement and entertaining. And unless I want to provide (cheap) entertainment for all those around me when the suit slips the wrong way, its going to be a one piece or tankini! π
However, as I have (ahem) a few years on both of you…my backyard bathing suits have sadly been retired as well. Mother nature can be cruel, and so can school age daughters! HA!
Melanie Gore
April 25, 2010 at 7:26 amGreat interview but you CAN NOT wear the bathing suit! You are to adorable and I don’t care if you have had 3 kids in 4 yrs! I am 42 and I can’t even do the tankini!

April 26, 2010 at 12:13 pmThere are some women who oppose tankinis who REALLY should be wearing them. That or a one piece. I resorted to a tankini last year, not even having had kids, and I think it looks cute. Like another commenter said, it leaves some skin between the top and bottom, which cuts down the geriatric nature of some tankinis. You both are so tiny, though, I’m sure you’d look just fine in a bikini!

April 26, 2010 at 4:31 pmI’m 2 weeks from turning 25 and I work in the fashion industry and I own that suit (well the one pieced version) in purple and I LOVE IT!!! I get constant compliments on it and now have three other friends who have gone and bought it.
I think it’s pretty darn stylish for a hot mama! π

It linked over to your website so I jumped over. I cant really figure out the relevance between your site and the one I came from, but your site good none the less .
