I’m home and I’m pooped! I had a wonderful weekend with new friends {& old} and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. I made a slight diversion from the original plan and spent an extra day/night in Birmingham… which meant I was away 4 days and 3 nights, I do believe that is a record for this mother of 3.

ddoll1

The drive was peaceful and quiet and I didn’t have to climb in the backseat until I arrived at my destination and that was to apply deodorant because I was so nervous the whole way up I sweated like I was working out {which I don’t do but attempted this weekend and is  why my arm in the first picture won’t go down}!

When I finally arrived home yesterday my kids didn’t recognize me.

whoareyou

And welcomed me with blank stares.

I introduced myself as their mother, the tender of all their needs, the picker-upper of all their toys and it finally jogged their memory.

And they said, “We missed you, we love you, we are so thankful for you. What did you bring us?”

I cut John Martin’s hair before I left on Friday. Have you ever cut or trimmed the hair of a 21 month-old BOY? It’s extremely hazardous and difficult {even with candy incentives}. Well, I did the best I could but realized upon completion he slightly resembled Jim Carey from Dumb & Dumber but even better than that, Justin {my anthropologist/archaeologist husband} has been calling him Yanomamo. <—- click on that!

Can’t wait to share more about my weekend! It was a combination of  time spent with 10  beautiful women that I’d never met {which is why I sweated the whole way to Birmingham}, a trip to the spa, a photography lecture and session, a wonderful time of worship, a trip to an art fair/wine tasting, and I wrapped up the weekend up by attempting 5 minutes of P90x… once my muscles are no longer confused I’ll be back.

I have been stalking your blog for the last 5 days, and I must say it is truly inspiring. I apologize if my many many visits to the blog have disrupted your tracking system. If you see the same IP address a MILLION times… sorry it’s just me pretending that I don’t have my own little 18 month old Rover to look after.

Love the Blog. Love your family, and so happy you had a wonderful time away.

Haha he does have hair like that. Hilarious.

I’ve been praying about a move to Birmingham and it’s exciting that there’s so much going on over there. Can’t wait to hear about the fun places you went!

I am laughing my butt off. You are hilarious. You need to layer that do up a little! Comb the top middle up and cut about an inch off then blend it out to the perimeter. It’ll look a lot less D&D. Do you have texturizing shears? Those would help too. I love you!!! Trying to find a week to come down still! XO

  • Comment by Cat Moore — April 27, 2010 @ 9:07 am

ok, I LOVED this post and Darby doll. second, I’m so jealous of your time in Bham AND the fact that you didn’t have climb in the back seat the whole way there. yes….sometimes I just turn sideways and stay in the backseat until we arrive at our destination because it’s easier than climbing back there repeated times. (plus, when i take my seat belt off up front, it makes this beeping sound until I’m out of the seat an it drives my husband in sane!) Anyway, glad you had a good time. May we ask more about what you were attending in the “ham” and are you going to blog about it!?!? So excited to hear! Thanks for sharing!!! Oh, and I did P90 while engaged leading up to our wedding and have never been in better shape in my life. It kicks your butt!

Darby, this weekend event DOES sound fun and inspiring and sweet! Can’t wait to hear more. The pictures are looking just fabulous, by the way – isn’t it so much more fun to shoot pics outside w/ good light instead of inside?!! I’m glad for warmer weather and outdoor pics :-) Welcome home!

  • Comment by Beth — April 27, 2010 @ 9:59 am

    Darby,
I absolutely LOVE your blog. As a mother of 3 little girls under 3 1/2 I can totally relate to how wonderful your weekend away must have been. There is nothing like the support and friendship of amazing women. p.s. I cut my girls hair too…doesn’t always turn out exactly how I imagined it looking ( I figure they won’t be traumatized until they hit school age) :) Have a great week!

  • Comment by Kristyn G — April 27, 2010 @ 10:03 am

Gotta love those P90x workouts! They are a killer! I was dying during the first warm-up, but thank goodness your body gets used to the torture! Glad you had a wonderful weekend-looking forward to hearing more about it.

  • Comment by Tara — April 27, 2010 @ 10:07 am

How funny! My boys hair is black and has looked like those kids hair before, lets just say I’m never cutting his hair agian. (wish I could show the pic I have it here at work on my desk and now I am going to have to change it) Your trip sounds great. you have nothing to worry about meeting new people, they will love you.

  • Comment by Dianne — April 27, 2010 @ 10:09 am

The blank stare picture is priceless! I am so glad you got away for a few days and enjoyed yourself. See everyone was still alive when you returned. I cannot wait to hear about it. xoxo

  • Comment by Leslie — April 27, 2010 @ 10:25 am

LOL yanomamo!! Also, I exercise almost everyday and I can run six miles at like a 30% San Francisco incline without much trouble but I can’t do even 2 minutes of P90x. That video is for like navy seals. I can’t believe you thought that was a good place to start!

  • Comment by Shireen — April 27, 2010 @ 10:35 am

That IS a long time from home!!! Glad you had fun! (I did 5 months of P90X, pulled a groin and hate it, now! :) )

  • Comment by Kathleen Cox — April 27, 2010 @ 11:02 am

Could it be the children have been to the “dark side”– their holiday has come to an end -maybe the were in the front seat driving. Now they will have to be in the back seat. Did the anthropologist husband document the “lost week end” in pictures . for your eyes only.?? My first thought at the blank stares or was it shock — now I have to take a bath.. now I have to eat vegetables– “Don’t Stop the Carnival ” Jimmy Buffett

  • Comment by Jessica — April 27, 2010 @ 1:12 pm

I LOVE Birmingham…went to Samford (on Lakeshore Dr…maybe you passed it?) my freshman year of college. I can’t wait to hear more about your trip – sounds like a lot of fun!! :) yanomamo made me crack up! JM is the cutest yanomamo I’ve ever seen.

  • Comment by Julie M. — April 27, 2010 @ 1:46 pm

I’ve been cutting my 22 month old’s hair since he was seven months old. JM looks great. Maybe just take a little bit more off the sides. Every hair cut I say will be my last and that he’s going to a professional, but I keep trimming his hair every 3-4 weeks. I think I’m getting quite good at it! Keep it up. Maybe just take a little bit more off the sides – tailor it to the ears.

  • Comment by Bre B. — April 27, 2010 @ 2:51 pm

Your blog is absolutely hilarious and I leave reading it. That picture of the Yanomamo had me laughing out loud at my office desk! Thanks for all your wonderful posts!

  • Comment by Design Darling — April 27, 2010 @ 2:56 pm

the bit about your kids’ reaction kills me. and the haircut?! the link was too funny but he’s still a little dreamboat.

  • Comment by Sarah — April 27, 2010 @ 3:17 pm

    Darby –

The doll…I forgot about the doll! I thought I saw you sneak her into your bag as we were leaving for the spa. J/K. By the way, JM’s hair looks fine, now would you please come up to Knoxvegas and give Jake’s hair a trim? I’d even settle for a “Beauty school” tutorial. Thanks! Great meeting you this weekend. What a blast.

  • Comment by Tara — April 27, 2010 @ 7:59 pm

  • Comment by Suzanne — April 27, 2010 @ 9:12 pm

Hilarious. Love Darby Doll, love your kids, love you.

Your posts keep getting funnier and funnier. And I hope you were teaching that Photography Class! Your pictures are incredible! I swear, they get better with each post too.

One last thing – I am VERY impressed that you did P90X! That’s hardcore! Which video did you do? I nearly die whenever I try to do one of my dvds. Tony Horton rocks though!

  • Comment by wendy — April 27, 2010 @ 9:18 pm

Love the t-shirt! The haircut is adorable–just like the boy– the good news is that at his age, he moves around so much that nobody is going to notice a few short(er) pieces!! I’m a new follower to your site and I just love it! You inspire me to have a lighter view of life! So thanks!

  • Comment by Rachel — April 27, 2010 @ 9:52 pm

I just started P90X two days ago and I am DYING! I know the pain is good though and it will get better (hopefully)..love your blog too..I always look forward to your new posts!

Sounds like a wonderful Mommy-weekend – can’t wait to hear more!

  • Comment by Chrissy — April 28, 2010 @ 6:57 am

I love when you use Darby doll in your posts!!!!!!!

And P90X is a killer, isn’t it? I was following the workouts until the third week … I had a simple pinched nerve and continued to work out for the next two days. During yoga – THE MOST PAINFUL YOGA I’VE EVER DONE – I wrenched my neck sooo bad that I was out of it for the next three weeks.

    And no … haven’t been tempted to go back. It’s a killer!! :o )

Can’t wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

the key to cutting a 2yr old’s hair (i did this yesterday) is parking them in front of a video! no need to thank me ;)

have been toying with the idea of cutting my two year old’s hair. I call him “The Hobbit” because he seriously looks like he lives in The Shire…which should tell you I probably can’t make it worse, but I am still nervous.

I think you did a fabulous job, though!! :) Glad you had fun on your weekend away! :)

  • Comment by noni — April 28, 2010 @ 1:52 pm

Welcome back! I think you may need to brush your hair. ;o)

  • Comment by Emily — April 28, 2010 @ 2:26 pm

Your babies must have missed you so much! The haircut part was the best – love the link! P90X is awesome but I cannot, for the life of me, get through the yoga video! I actually layed down on my mat at about 30 minutes to go and fell asleep once – just like that! I love the Kenpo and core videos… enjoy! (PS, if your body hurts to the touch after 3 days, don’t worry – it goes away. That was my Easter!)
