91 In Life

Full Swing

Good Morning, Rovers! Summer is in full swing and we are loving our time together! After an action packed weekend our summer is certainly off to a good start.

date night with Justin Friday night
early morning trip to the garden Saturday to check on bees and gather our first harvest from the garden
Saturday afternoon of swimming & splashing
a Saturday evening spent outside, under beautiful Live Oaks at a small-town rodeo watching Cowboy Josh {garage band member} do a little steer wrestling
a Sunday afternoon floating in the pool with Justin while children nap
a Sunday afternoon drive {solo} with a great book on cd to visit Sister for a slumber party
lots of kisses from my precious niece Loaney-Lips
lots of hard laughing with sister
    a few outfit consultations
early Monday morning coffee in Sister’s garden
a visit to Sister’s always inspiring office to welcome new summer intern, I’m the self-proclaimed  “welcoming committee”. I also tried to tidy up while I was there but ended up spilling 2,397 peanut butter pretzels on the floor! I think I heard them crying when I left, oh wait, that was me.

And while all of this was going on I took a few pictures…

Friday afternoon Paige helped me make egg salad {with butter knife} for Morgan for lunch. She was the most enthusiastic sous chef a girl could ask for. She said, “This is the best egg sawad in your whole life!” {I think she meant in “the whole world” but got a little mixed up.} When I asked her if she wanted to have it for lunch she said, “No, Mommy! Egg salad is yuck!”

At the end of the school year the girl’s preschool sends the children home with their school supplies, which includes markers. Rover got into them a couple times this weekend. If he doesn’t have a future in lawn care he may aspire to be a tattoo artist! Thankfully they’re washable and mostly on his skin and not his clothing!

boxeduprover

On our way home from the garden things got a little too quiet in the backseat and apparently he got his hands on Paige’s red marker and then they had a “bite your leg” competition!

legsuckers

The garden is looking good. I can take little to no credit for it this year.  Justin has done a great job keeping it weeded and tilled. We did exclusively start it from seeds this year so I can take credit for watering them when they were here at the house, but that’s it! It’s amazing how quick seeds can turn into giant plants… even the tomatoes are knee-high!

Saturday night we braved keeping the kids out late and took them to a rodeo. I put on my best Taylor Swift outfit and off we went! The setting & weather were perfect… outside at sunset under Live Oaks dripping with Spanish Moss!

I only had my wide angle {which only zooms to 50 mm} and the sun went completely down about 30 minutes after we got there, all I had to work with the bright stadium lights, most of these are shot in 1600… next time {because we will do this again!} I’m taking a bigger lens, which means I have to get one!

The kids loved it. And so did the adults. Y’all, a rodeo is thrilling. Did you know? I mean, I thought I was going to cry at the opening and I held my breath during every event hoping the cowboys and cowgirls wouldn’t get hurt!

This girl opened the rodeo up by riding her beautiful horse at about 50 miles per hour around the ring while patriotic music played. I kept giving myself pep talks that went like this, “Don’t cry! It’s a rodeo, you can’t cry! It’s ok! The horse is beautiful, the girl is beautiful, the music is beautiful! Don’t cry! God Bless America! Swallow, don’t cry!” I also quickly learned to avoid the lovely fence in pictures!

openingcowgirl

We may have an aspiring cowboy on our hands… but don’t worry, Mommas don’t let their babies grow up to be cowboys! Or their big girls to be cowgirls! I think Rover was puckering up with hopes that some cowgirl would throw him a kiss.

I must say the cowgirls were just as talented as the cowboys.

cowgirl2

Some of my pictures were {not clear but} a little crazy like this…

cowboyoff

Josh’s event {Steer Wrestling} was second to last so by this time the sun was long gone and it was way past bedtime… so this is the best I could do, even at 1600, but you get the idea. Basically Josh and Baby Doll {his horse} barrel out of the holding  area  {pictured below} in hot pursuit of the steer, then when he’s next to the steer he jumps off his horse at a very high rate of speed onto the steer and then they wrestle a little. Let me just say, I don’t think PETA would approve. But no animals are injured, wrestled, but not injured.

josh2

josh3

Josh’s steer didn’t want to cooperate. He got it down but it kept it’s legs under it, or something. That’s the hard thing about the rodeo, animals are unpredictable!

joshsteer

After he rode he had a little chat with another cowboy… I think their conversation went something like this, “That *#^% steer!” And back in the pen the steer was probably thinking, “That *#&@ cowboy!” Most of these cowboys, at some point or another will get paid back by the animals. Which is why my children will not grow up to be cowboys.

josh4

We had a great time and will hopefully make more visits to the rodeo! The kids were wiped out and everyone was asleep {except Rover because he’s a rover} within five minutes of leaving!

The weekend ended with a quick visit to see Sloaney lips and her mom. I love this sweet little angel like she’s my own! She got a new big girl car and all I could think was, “Man, I’m glad Rover’s not here!”

Happy Tuesday!

Looks like a fun action-packed weekend! We love to make “egg sawad” too! Your garden looks terrific. Ours is growing well too…but my husband wants a bigger one he says for next year….probably the size of yours. I thought the rodeo pictures were great. That looks like a good time and your cowboy and cowgirls look like they really enjoyed themselves. Slaoney’s pink car is precious! Happy Tuesday!

I know what you mean about holding back tears during the opening ceremonies at rodeos. My favorite opening is when they have someone come out with the flag and recite “This Rugged Old Flag” gets me every time. You can read it here: https://www.ceharger.com/raggedflag.htm

Nothin’ like an outdoor rodeo on a Friday night! Speaking of lenses, have you ever rented one? I heard of borrowlenses.com, but haven’t tried it. Could be a cool way to check out lenses before buying…

P.S. – Sloaney in her little pink Model T = total preciousness!

I LOVE that pink car and started to search for it on the web and came across this…https://www.ronjuneshop.com/kids-pedal-tractors.html

Does your little Rover have one? If not, he would love it.

Where did the pink car come from?

I have some questions about your bee’s. My husband and I have an acre of blueberries that we sell locally, but I’m interested in getting some bee’s for pollinating purposes. My question’s are how did you all get started- did you purchase hives, or did you purchase bee’s and let them make the hives…Honestly I’m clueless as to how to get started, so any info you wouldn’t mind sharing would be great.

I often find myself in leg eating contests when I attempt to diet… maybe the Rover and I have something in common. 🙂 Slogna-Bologna is now Sloaney Lips – adorable and much better than the other option – Bologna Lips – love her and her little car! And I love your garden and bees! When I go into my hives it is so relaxing and the sound of the bees is now the sound of summer to me – not to mention the smell of the smoker – the new smell of summer. I love it all and somehow I think it helps slow life down a little being around them. Hope to see lots of your sweet children and your summer adventures on your blog over the next few moths!

I always have to fight back the tears when they ride out with the flag. It just doesn’t get anymore uniquely American than the flag being held by a cowgirl (or cowboy). How many times in the Olympics do the USA athletes come out in the opening ceremony with cowboy hats on? Gotta love it.

    Hi Darby!!

Oh for heavens’ sake. I’m the one who left you a comment a while back and called you Darcy. Oh dear. Sorry about that! Love your post and it looks like you all are sipping up every bit of summer!
You have the most beautiful way with your children! And you point to the Father with each and every post…..something not many can do. Simply beautiful.

Love that you have bees and hives. That’s impressive. That and the leg biting contest.
I don’t know a thing about bees and hives. Except the kind that appear on my neck before a speaking engagement or a once in a lifetime event…:)

    Big Hug,

    Sibi

Among the residential and commercial services that Williams
& Fogg offers are electrical plumbing services (repairs, new installation,
replacements and upgrades, receptacles, lights, fans, panel boxes, water heater repairs & installations,
high tech visual, and drain cleaning equipment), heating and cooling systems (both
for residential and commercial, includes heat pumps & roof top units, all makes
& models, sales, services, & repair, and all gas, oil & electric
needs), and ventilation systems (duct work & cleaning, all makes & models, hood work, hospitals, churches, restaurants, convenience stores,
and fresh air systems). Factors that cause roof damage include weather conditions, moisture, algae, fungus, moss, and so on. There are several ways
to check for a leak that you cannot see.

Standard designs include curved-face or front-faced, and a
popular choice is the slotted guttering allowing rainwater to overflow at the front, thus avoiding water damage to exterior painted walls.
Though they might be willing to offer you the lowest possible
rates, what you save now you will pay later to have their work corrected.
Be sure and use the advice mentioned above to ensure that your roof
    in tip-top shape.
