Hello Rovers

It’s been a while… and this is likely to be an all over the place post!

I thought I’d bring you up to speed first on my bruise, I’d hate if any of you were losing sleep wondering if I’ve had my arm amputated or not. This was when it progressed to a nice dark plum color on Saturday…
bruiser
Thanks for your concern… I’m still milking it and it’s still tender.

And yes, of course, in addition to fake sprains and glasses I made homemade retainers out of paperclips and the part that fits snugly in the pallet was made of either a chewed-up tootsie roll or a caramel.

Last Friday two of my best friends came for a visit with their boys. These are two of the most incredible friends a girl could ask for. Some of my very first friends at Auburn and we can always pick up right where we left off. This was an outtake and I thought it was kinda funny. Eli, Paige sends a sincere apology for the blow to your precious little face.

all

They are identical twins {Ashley on left and Allyson on right} so it was only natural and fitting that Erika and I be friends with them. We’ve all been in each other’s weddings, I was pregnant in both of theirs. I really just love them and love being in their company. They’re real, they’re honest, and they’re FUN. When they arrived my house was still a mess and my hair was greasy. They said, “Oh D-Bone, you know we don’t care and do you have on eye liner?”  Seriously, real people ask those type questions when they walk in the door. We have so many memories together and so many more to make. Sister, we wished you & Sloaney were here with us!

Our weekend was great, I took very few pictures but I did manage to snap one of the fire that Justin kept going all weekend.

Did I mention that this post will likely be all over the place?

Rover’s been under the weather since Friday. This pretty much sums up how he’s feeling…
sickrover

And while he’s feeling rotten, he’s not near as bad as he looks… the picture below was taken a few seconds after {and the fact that the teeny tiny tip of his finger is cut off makes my skin crawl… just pretend like I captured it all, ok?} roverarms

Despite feeling rotten he’s been quite helpful with the housekeeping…

Speaking of housekeeping… I’m just a little backlogged on emails. I’m slowly but surely getting through them… thanks for your patience with me. As you know, I have 3 little rovers who take precedence.

This summer I did a few rounds of a Q & A session… I thought it would be a good way to answer some of the questions that I was getting but then it overwhelmed me and I quit after session 2. I’m not convinced I want to take that route again but my little mind is trying to figure out how to answer emails in a blog post form because a lot of the emails ask similar questions!

This will be a start with the latest: Where did you get the jars for the honey butter, Walmart says they’re seasonal?I got mine at Walmart this summer. But most grocery stores carry canning supplies in the tupperware/aluminum foil pan aisle. What kind of sewing machine do you have? Do you like it? My sewing machine is a Kenmore, I love it. I talk more about it and my embroidery machine IN THIS POST. And every time the little orange vacuum shows up I get emails about it too… it’s also a Kenmore and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it too! It’s very inexpensive and does a great job. I’m very partial to canisters, there’s no turning back once you go with a canister! What pant pattern do you use for the kids pants? I’ve always used Jillian by Bonnie Blue for both boys and girls. The girls usually get a ruffle to “fancy” them up a little. How did you paint your kitchen cabinets? Primed with Kilz {oil based} and painted with latex RustScat paint by Coronado in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. I think we rolled the cabinet doors and brushed but I’ve slept, or actually, haven’t slept since then. Are you going to post the chicken pot pie recipe? Yes, very soon! What lens do you primarily use? That’s an easy one for me to answer… I use them both about the same. The great thing is that every picture I post is a link to it’s FLICKR PHOTO PAGE that looks like this:

 flickr1

At the bottom right side of the page it tells you what camera was used and if you click on the link for “MORE PROPERTIES” it takes you to this page:

flickr2

This shows you the picture’s properties including the focal length and aperture. So… if it says 50 mm you’re safe to assume it was shot with my 50 mm 1.8 unless I’m using my wide angle and it’s zoomed all the way to 50mm… but that’s fairly unlikely and if it is then the aperture won’t be any lower than 2.8.   Does that make sense?

Do your kids act like this?

raiger

Ok, whew, I’m so glad. Mine don’t either and look, she dropped her pink “retainer”.

Also, would it make any of you feel better if I told you the following:

  • We still don’t have a Christmas tree.
  • I haven’t wrapped any Christmas presents yet, because…
  • I haven’t bought any Christmas presents yet, nor…
  • have I made any.
  • Oh… and no Christmas card yet. Not even an “idea” for one.

I need to get busy, Merry Christmas!

Just had to say hey! I was shocked to see no comments yet! Love your blog, but honestly I don’t know how you do it all. You make it all look so easy! I love all your “Rover” pics. I have a 15 month old named Selah who I think looks and acts like the female version of him. They’d probably play great together, or they might just beat eachother up=) Merry Christmas!

Darby – I just want you to know that if I wasn’t completely certain you have at least 75 emails to answer already, I’d totally send one. But, I won’t. Mainly because I have nothing earth shattering to say. Just that I really dig your blog 🙂 That sicky picture of JM made me laugh out loud. So funny – but I do hope the poor guy gets well soon.

And thanks for the tip on the camera info on Flickr. I had no idea. Neat stuff 🙂

I haven’t done anything for Christmas yet, either. Oh, wait. I have started my Christmas cards, but that’s it! I need to get crankin’, too!

Great post – I love randomness… my mind kinda works that way too. I will even demonstrate: Do all Rover’s look the same when they are sick? Yours looks similar to mine these days ;( Poor little dude! At least he is still pulling his weight with the housekeeping!! HA. Love the fire in the fireplace – you are BRAVE. I haven’t worked up the courage to even light a match with my two toddlers around. Our fireplace is currently filled with trucks. Hey, if we aren’t actually using it for fires, we might as well get some extra storage out of it -right???? Good luck with your list of to-dos. I am not that much further ahead… yikes!

    Darby,

I am so glad you posted. I was actually starting to worry about you (your arm) or the kids! Leave it to a mom to have that train of thought! Poor John Martin- that picture makes me want to cry! He looks so pathetic and miserable. Glad to see the second, more chipper picture!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for answering the question about the lens preference. My husband and I have been anxious to hear. I think we will just take the plunge and get them both. Then, hopefully, with enough practice our photos will look more like yours. I did say LOTS of practice, didn’t I?!?! lol

I am not real on top of my Christmas to do list either. We do have the tree up but that is just about it.

    Blessings,
    Heather:)

You crack me up! OF COURSE I made my fake retainers with a paper clip. My material of choice for the top part, though, was gum wrapped in tin foil. I was so inventive, huh?

Those little puppy Robeez from Target are oh-so-familiar…both of my boys have had those exact ones!

Good luck on your Christmas-ing 🙂

Darby – your 5 bullet points at the end of this post MADE MY WHOLE WEEK. Seriously. Thank you. It does make me feel better. We have: no tree, not a gift wrapped (a very few bought), cards that have not come back from being printed (but a very disastrous missing addresses of friends list that i have procrastinated on is available to do…) and i have not made a single gift that i had planned on making. oh – and my son’s 2nd birthday and husbands birthday are both in the next few days… not a thing planned. december is beating me up! merry christmas!!

I sure have missed you! Glad to see you back on. I figured you would have everything decorated and would be sitting around making costumes for the church choir and half of the congregation. I feel much better knowing that I am just a ‘wee’ bit ahead of you and I do mean a *wee*! But–no excuses here–my kids are grown and gone! Hope to see you again real soon!

HI!!! First off, Rover’s striped all in one outfit is cute beyond words. Love that boy! Looks like a little preppy cowboy riding the vacuum cleaner;-) As far as all the holiday planning, or lack thereof, your just human so don’t sweat it. I actually did all my stuff early this year for the first time in my life and I’m feeling very adult! Still no Christmas card though, thinking of going digital this year, not so romantic, but oh so practical especially since it’s already mid-December and I think mailing things is already getting late. Oh well, maybe next year. I’ll email you soon, we had a blast in the States. Sorry to have missed you, but we’ll be back in the Spring. xoxo

Thanks Darbs! Have a wonderful day

Oh, Darby, I do love your posts – especially the all-in-ones. You make me chuckle. Hope Rover’s feeling better soon & that ugly bruise disappears (good thing you don’t have to go sleeveless at Christmas).
Now, get busy on those gifts.

    December 10, 2009 at 7:41 am

Oh my goodness…you DID make me feel better! 🙂 lol Is that wrong? hehe I don’t know about you but I feel like Christmas once again big time snuck up on me this year…of course, it happens EVERY YEAR so you’d think that I’d be prepared for it by now…NOPE! Better get ta crackin’…my kiddos are getting very impatient with me. They “wanna be decorated like everyone else is decorated” (they are 4,3 and 1 and already trying to keep up with the Joneses)! Every.single.house.we.pass on the way to and from anywhere…they scream HAPPY CHRISTMAS if it’s decorated. Needless to say, at the end of every road trip, I have to grab for the Tylenol. Oh to be a kid again… 😉 Merry Christmas!

You need a personal assistant! Let me know if you find one because I want one too :DI don’t know how you do it all. I love your sweater in your bruise picture, and your kids are always dressed SO SO CUTE!
I have the same ‘Alien Pod’ vacuum cleaner and have had it for about 5 years and love, love LOVE it!!
Christmas this year has snuck up on everyone I know. Thank goodness for Etsy which is where I’ve gotten a lot of my gifts.

Darby I love reading your blog and I appreciate your honesty. Your children are beautiful and I love how you capture their expressions.

I also like how big your pictures show up so I signed up for a FLickr account and went through all the steps now my question is HOW DO YOU UPLOAD MORE THAN ONE PICTURE TO BLOGGER AT A TIME?? If you or anyone else has time to answer this I would love to know. I asked the forum on the site and they basically said it couldn’t be done 🙁

Darby, I’ve made 4 batches of your butter in the last 2 days. We can’t stop eating it. Yesterday I came home at 5pm from running an errand and found my son and his 2 teenage friends eating frozen waffles so they could eat the butter. It’s so good. I’m giving it to everyone! Although…mine didn’t turn out nearly as cute as yours.

i TOTALLY made all the fake stuff…retainers and the like!

i hate to ask a question…but WHERE is that cute striped outfit on rover from?? is it available somewhere to buy?? i have a 17 month old little boy that would look scrumptious in something like that!

Great summary, thanks for being so honest, I think anyone Mom with young kids can relate. I just remaind myself before I know it they are all going to be in school and I’ll be missing them like crazy. My oldest started kindergarten this year and other parents would tell me how great it is when they are in school b/c you’ll finally get some time to yourself – well I hate it! (K is all day here) I only get to see him a few hours at night and we have to sqeeze in homework, dinner, bath, etc… So the time with them is more important than decorations, and presents (we surely don’t need any more toys).
P.S. I can always find jars at my Walmart. I have gotten them at the grocery store but it’s more $$$.

I love random posts, because that is how my brain works…..it goes every direction. You crack me up. We should totally be friends. I’m behind on Christmas and my daughters 2nd birthday, which is next Thursday and nothing is planned. I’ve gotta get busy. My plan next year is to have the tree and decorations up on Thanksgiving weekend since I have that time off work. December is kicking my butt!

That bruise looks painful. Maybe you need a bubble, like bubble boy, so you don’t cause more pain to yourself. I also have not done much Christmas preparation. I have decorated, but i just bought the first gift last nite! yikes! and i have 7 family birthdays around xmas time. i keep reminding myself not to stress over it because it’s not the reason for the season and it will all get done. somehow.

So i haven’t tasted the hot pepper jelly yet, but as of this morning it still hadn’t set. i’m keeping my fingers crossed. it was supposed to be part of christmas presents but maybe i will just end of keeping it as a glaze. we’ll see.
as always, i enjoyed the post.

Hey girl! Been missing you in Blogland! Love the all over the place posts, because my mind works like that too! If you haven’t already, check out my blog post about Luke’s birthday. I made some cute little cupcake toppers that add a lot of cuteness to plain cupcakes and they were easy to make! You might like to try them! Oh thank GOODNESS, I was a little afraid I was going to open this post and see a fabulously DIY Christmas spread, although I don’t have 3 adorable rovers as an excuse, it does make me feel a bit better that our home is still woefully un-cheered. P.S. My sweet momma gave me your exact same camera as an early Christmas present, now I just must figure out how to properly use it, thanks for the tips!

I love your admissions at the end of this post! We JUST did our card and I was feeling so bitter about it (the picture part is never much fun for anyone). I’m so relieved now that it’s done but can’t help feeling that Christmas cards are so much pressure! 🙂 Am also not doing well on presents and never wrap until Christmas eve. Well, enjoy the season with your beautiful family!

  • Lillian @ Domestic Simplicity
    December 10, 2009 at 10:59 am

Best of luck getting to all of the Christmas “stuff.” Enjoy your little ones the most – that’s what matters above all else and they don’t know the difference of when it all happens. My mom started doing only New Years cards to send blessings for the new year when she had 4 little ones(or maybe even earlier when she had 2 or 3) and I’ve always thought it was such a great idea – you can get to them in January after all of the excitement dies down and it gives a few extra minutes to write an extra note to loved ones. Plus you can send a cute picture from Christmas that would otherwise be ready for cards before Christmas. Enjoy the season!
p.s. LOOOOOOVE the “retainer” – my 2 yr old has “glasses” that look amazingly similar(a handle to something?) and I always had “retainers” and “braces” with gum:)

Back to tell the other Tracy that you can upload more than one picture to blogger if you go in and edit your settings. It will allow you to update to the new editor … do it. Do it now. It has a lot of cool things on it … like, it will let you post bigger pictures and you can upload more than one and you can click on the picture and put it anywhere on your post … I could go on and on and on … but, I will stop.

Hi. I can’t find where to email you on your blog so I’ll just leave a comment. What kind of camera do you have? Do you like it? What kind of lenses do you have? What kind of sewing machine do you have? What kind of embroidery machine do you have? What kind of pants are those? How is your bruise doing? Those girls look like twins!!
    Have a great night!
    XOXO
    😉

Hey Darby! I’m so excited to learn how to see which lens and settings you used for various pictures. I’m getting a Rebel for Christmas and I can’t wait to start “playing” but I think it will be helpful to see how you capture such great moments. I have a lot to learn! Thanks for sharing!

YEp. I did the paper clip retainers too. BTW-have you seen my bruise??? I am just sayin’-
    LOL!
You have to help me with my camera. I am simply not getting the same quality of pictures as you and that simply won’t do. :))))
Don’t worry about anything on your to do list-you have your stockings hung my dear and outside lights!!!!
I dare you to not do cards this year-I double dog dare you, but if you simply can’t stand the thought of it, I have full confidence that you will do something terribly wonderful that will make us all smile and wish we had it as together as you.

okay, oops….so i posted a comment before i was done reading, whatever. but i HAD to include this part because i was sipping on some eggnog while reading and got to this part:
“Ok, whew, I’m so glad. Mine don’t either and look, she dropped her pink “retainer”.”
and it caught me by suprise and i started to laugh so hard that i snorted my eggnog all over the computer screen and keyboard. now i have the giggles and cannot stop. i am waiting for the husband to come in here and ask if i have lost my mind. well, duh….doesn’t that happen with childbirth?

    seriously, thanks for the laugh!

hi darby! love your blog! do you read all these comments?? bless your heart- i can’t imagine you would have time. i feel a little bad leaving a comment- hate to take up your time by leaving something to read left by someone you don’t know who incessantly stalks your blog (and your sis’s blog). anyway- yes, it does make me feel better that you are a little behind on christmas “stuff” too. thanks for always being so transparent! loved your blog post about that a few weeks ago. hope you have a great christmas with your sweet family! and- war eagle (regardless of our unsuccessful season, i am still warring eagle 🙂 i went to AU too and saw you and erika did as well! i live in birmingham, alabama…. sorry to leave a long comment… i will be more brief next time 🙂

Darby, LOVE your blog…we have mutual friends. 🙂 A weird question…but, what kind of vacuum cleaner is that in your pictures that you use?? I am in the “market” for a new one and deciding between and upright Dyson and that “style”. Do you like and recommend it?

    Merry Christmas!

I just found your blog last week and I love it!!! I even got ambition and made your honey cinnimon butter, or is it cinnimon honey butter?!? LOVE it and yes, you were right, I ended up eating FOUR biscuits this morning and after 3 kids carbs are no longer my friend. I plan on giving them as teachers gifts with cute Christmas spreaders. I did have to use 8oz. jars because that’s all I could find, but they are the short wide ones so it looks cute!

I like posts like this! First, I hope Rover feels better. My son had the same sickly look this week & the same cute shoes. Thank you for sharing about your lenses. I was wondering which one you used as well. My xsi just arrived yesterday and I’m learning but so far I LOVE it! Oh and I made the cinnamon honey butter…it was a hit! Good luck with your to do list. I’m working on mine too.
