I have a few things to catch up on… life has been quite busy lately. Justin has been out of town for a few days for the 3rd time this month and it throws me for a loop every time it happens. So, I’m going to smoosh a whole bunch of stuff into one post… hang with me.

bootlegs

Before I begin, NO Rover is not potty training yet. I sent Daddy to the store for diapers, specifically Huggies and he came home with a box of 2T/3T Pull Ups. The conversation went like this when he walked it with them:

Me: You didn’t?
Him: What?
Me: Buy Pull Ups?
Him: Oh, um, yeah. I did.
Me: Why? He’s 18 months old.
Him: Well, I know you said Huggies but they had Mickey Mouse on them.
Me: What’s wrong with Mickey Mouse? He’s worn Mickey since he was born.
Him: Well, he’s a boy.
Me: Yes….
Him: Well, I saw these and they have cars on them.
Me: And they’re kinda expensive.
Him: Yeah, they are… like $.45 each.
Me: Yeah, Huggies are like $.29 each.
Him: Yeah, you’re right. I stood there forever but couldn’t buy the Mickey Mouse ones.
Me: It’s ok, Mickey Mouse is a boy too.
Him: Yeah. Um, next time I’ll get the Huggies.
Me: Um, yeah… that would be a good idea!

At least he got them for me, right!? I will add that they are about as absorbent as swim diapers. :)

In other news…

valentine9

I’ve been up to my eyeballs in May Johnson’s Valentines. I’ve been sorting and looking and wondering what I’m going to do with 150 of them. They are delightful to look at but this picture is a good representation of what happens at our house. I start a project, things get out of control and Justin literally gets surrounded by it. Please tell me we’re not the only family!

LOTSofValentines

He was on the computer trying to list a pair of boots he bought for me that were too big. We tried to take some pictures for Ebay and this is what happened in the process:
all3_boots
roverboots
justinpaiger

I ended up taking care of both the Valentines and the Ebay listing… while he covered the rovers. He picked out and bought the boots while he was out of town last weekend. It was a very kind gesture that nearly made me throw up.  I keep telling myself– “You CAN keep them, he bought them for you because he loves you.”  {The most expensive pair of shoes I’ve ever owned are my Saucony running shoes from Shoe Carnival and I think they were $49.99.} He made me close my eyes and he put them on my feet and I walked around and realized they were too big. When I slipped them off and saw the label and thought I’d throw up right there… I had seen them on PW and I knew they were nice… told him I couldn’t keep them but he told me I could. So, long story very short… we had a friend pick up the right size so now we have 2 pairs. We can return them and will if they don’t sell, but he bought them a long way away so we thought we’d try ebay instead… and who doesn’t love an auction!? And by the way… I totally love them and haven’t taken them off since he got them… and he likes to see me in them! :)

Ok, speaking of Pioneer Woman… I’ve been meaning to tell y’all that I sign up for her giveaways. Almost all of them. I mean, I know 34,000 other people comment to win or enter to win… but I think, “it takes 30 seconds and wouldn’t a $500 gift card be nice?!” So, anyway, she called for sunsets earlier this week… and I’ve got a few of those in my collection so I threw one in the mix and dog gone it… she picked it for the first group. I was pretty excited– to say the least. Thanks to those of y’all who brought it to my attention.

As excited as I was about PW I was even more excited to see the February issue of Southern Living that features my precious and talented sister with a 6 page spread of a fabulous house she did for some of my most favorite people in the whole world. The house is unbelievable and as wonderful as the images are, the house is even more beautiful in real life, I wish you could see the bedrooms, bathrooms and Mitch’s office! Mitch & Gaye have been incredible mentors to Justin & I for many years. They absolutely love the Lord and have used their fabulous house for His glory and I’m so happy for them! My best friend LA {their oldest daughter} and her precious little ones are in the pictures too! I think it hits newsstands next week… snatch up a copy! **And there was one minor detail that SL omitted from the article & sources… my dear husband was responsible for hanging all those lovely collections of frames & plates!! I must give credit where credit is due!!**

I’ve also been working on things for Craft Hope but can’t quite seem to get it all together fast enough. The listings are all due by today {because they’ve been inundated with buyers and contributors} but if I can’t get them all finished I will list them in my own Etsy shop and donate all proceeds to Craft Hope/Doctors Without Borders! I’ve finished 4 boo boo bags and am almost finished with 3 BIG rice bags. Don’t forget to check out their shop HERE… stuff is flying out the door!

booboobag1

The smaller ones {above} can be frozen or microwaved and used for boo boos {or migraines or puffy early-morning eyes} .

booboobag2

Each one has a slip-off cover…

booboobag3

… and is infused with the most wonderful and relaxing scent of peppermint oil.

I’ll be back soon with this recipe…

Oh Darby. Don’t you dare feel bad about those Lucchese boots. Your husband has great taste and knows they’ll last a lifetime. Mine are my favorite! And maybe we need to chat about the $50 Sauconys. Teeth and feet are worth spending money on!

  • Comment by Mandy — January 20, 2010 @ 5:00 pm

Precious boots….you so deserve them….and I love the Valentines…oh..and congrats on the photo with PW. I read her blog and didn’t see the photos so I will go back and check it out. I will wait until my SL magazine arrives in the mail to view Erika’s spread…so proud of you both! Have a good one and yes, my house looks like this very frequently when I get some IDEA to change things up or make something…so no worries there! Caos to order…I learned that in my high school art class and I quote this line often….Mandy

I recently got a pair of Luchesse boots over Christmas. Believe me – I wouldn’t have bought them for myself (the husband and I just remodeled our kitchen), so I totally understand about you freaking out at the price. I tried them on while I as out shopping with my mom after seeing them on PW’s blog. My mom bought them for me and they are my MOST FAVORITE pair of shoes EVER! If only they went with my boring-CPA-work-clothes everyday…. My point is, don’t feel guilty because they are awesome!!!

  • Comment by Jennifer — January 20, 2010 @ 5:40 pm

    Those boots are wonderful! Perhaps I will look for them on ebay ( ;
    Congrats on the sunset photo!

  • Comment by brandy — January 20, 2010 @ 6:06 pm

Oh man, I love me some chocolate delight! Yummy and easy, can’t beat it! The boots are fabulous! And that is really funny about the diapers. I was going to ask why you has him in swim diapers in January. But that explains it!

  • Comment by Jen — January 20, 2010 @ 6:19 pm

My Southern Living came in the mail today and I sat right down with it while I was “helping” my son with his homework. More like I was helping him focus and what better time to peruse my new issue of an old favorite magazine. I was pouring over every detail of that house, reading about the designer, and her twin sister…hey it was you guys! The house is gorgeous and you, and your sister, are both incredibly talented! That house might need to be my inspiration for a redo.

  • Comment by Allison — January 20, 2010 @ 6:19 pm

Yes, my projects seem to take over my house too! It drives my husband crazy! And I usually have more than one project going on at a time, so that means total craziness!
I gave him a project of building me a sewing closet – we will see if it gets done in 2010!

  • Comment by Mott — January 20, 2010 @ 6:32 pm

Congrats on being selected in PW’s photo group! That’s awesome! The boots are beautiful and yes, my dear husband also does not understand when I crowd him out working on a project! I don’t understand why they are never happy when we make sure we leave them a little corner to work in??? LOL I noticed on the pic of him with the Valentines, it looks like he placed a yardstick where you couldn’t cross the line! Must think he’s in the grocery store…funny!

  • Comment by Jessica — January 20, 2010 @ 6:51 pm

I wish my foot were smaller! Love the boots. Congrats on your photo and good luck with the valentines. I can’t wait to see Southern Living.

    PS LOVE the Valentines!

  • Comment by Tara — January 20, 2010 @ 7:35 pm

Oh those boots would be wonderful for this Kansas farm girl. Too bad my feet are much too big!

  • Comment by alison g. (brazil) — January 20, 2010 @ 7:37 pm

Killer Luchesse’s – Justin’s thoughts were certainly in the right place! I wish I could take you to the vintage and used boot shop I favored when we lived in Houston – tons of amazing, beautiful specimens of boots – already broken in, and great prices. I’ll have mine forever.

I’m so tickled first with the feature of your sunset pic on PW – I’m consistently inspired by your talent with the lens. Secondly, for Erika’s feature in SL. I’ve only seen scanned images online, but the home looks like perfection. She too, inspires me daily – and the publication for her is well-deserved.

I’m single-parenting a lot these days, too, as Ben is traveling, so I’m right there with ya (whew!)

    take care!!!

  • Comment by Courtney Walsh — January 20, 2010 @ 7:37 pm

So I bought 500 decorating magazines and I kid you not Southern Living is the only one I didn’t pick up. Now I’m going to have to go back and get it just to see the six page spread! (Congrats to your sis…and your hubby the plate-hanger.) :)

And I love the boo boo bags. Any mama would!! I will have to check those out…we get lots of boo boos around here!

  • Comment by Norma Lee Good — January 20, 2010 @ 7:53 pm

Wow…so much to comment on! love the valentines. love the pull-ups story. LOVE THE Lucchese boots!!! Forget the saucony…you can run in these too! I have a pair of them and LOVE THEM!!! How sweet of him…

  • Comment by Melissa — January 20, 2010 @ 8:00 pm

Well, divide the cost of the boots by 20– my back door neighbor has been wearing her Luchesse boots for 21 years, and has had them resoled 4 times. They are still beautiful!

And I bout dropped on the floor when I opened my SL. I instantly recognized the spread as Erica’s work– I look at her beautiful portfolio a lot. What GREAT exposure– and what a beautiful, beautiful house!

  • Comment by Lane — January 20, 2010 @ 8:03 pm

I’m glad you aren’t potty training because we aren’t even thinking about it yet with our 16 month old! :) I don’t plan on tackling that for another year or so!!
Can’t wait to check the Southern Living article….my husband landscaped and maintains their yard. They are such wonderful people.
So excited about that recipe too!!

  • Comment by kristen — January 20, 2010 @ 8:10 pm

haaa. (on your counter) i love it, mine is covered in carnival birthday decorations and valentine “ideas”, by the way – definitely bagging up some heart candy canes, love the ideas and LOVE the boo boo bags

  • Comment by Ashley — January 20, 2010 @ 8:35 pm

Darby, I love PW giveaways, too. I know my chances are SO small, but I still enter them anyway. I am so glad your picture was selected – VERY cool! I need to get out and practice w/ sunsets, too! Oh, and love the boots…would have said the same thing had A come home w/ them though – this year, I settled for a $49.99 pair :-)

  • Comment by Tyne — January 20, 2010 @ 8:42 pm

Oh Darby, You are a dear! But I sooooo wish you hadn’t bought a second pair of the Luchesse’s and instead had bought a pair of Rios of Mercedes or Anderson Bean (named for my two great grandmothers- Mary Anderson and Macie Bean)… It’s a family thing! And they, too, are gorgeous!

  • Comment by Devon — January 20, 2010 @ 8:47 pm

Congratulations on so many things!!! The photograph on PW, Erika’s spread–all is such good news and I’m happy for your family.

Your etsy shop? How great! Do you ever think that it would be a fun idea to put together an etsy shop similar to the one for Haiti–but one that donates its profits year-round to various charities of the month? I’m so in awe of America’s response to Haiti but it makes me want to donate more..always. Not just when a crisis occurs. Any interest?

  • Comment by Abby Maddox — January 20, 2010 @ 8:54 pm

Can I just say how incredibly happy it makes me that he bought those for you!? :) I can’t wait to see your hot little self in them either ;)

  • Comment by Alice — January 20, 2010 @ 9:18 pm

Congrats on your PW photo! I’ve just recently started reading regularly & I enter the contests too…like you said, why not? Haven’t submitted any photos yet, but I did try the Smartypants Quiz on Tuesday night. Been meaning to email you about the Southern Living spread. Mine came one day the end of last week, and finally over the weekend I had a chance to sit down and read it. I saw that article and thought, “That house looks familiar. Wait, those names sound familiar too…I wonder if they’re Darby’s friends.” I turned the page & sure enough! How cool is that!

  • Comment by Rachel P. — January 20, 2010 @ 9:23 pm

I’m loving this post! I’ve only potty trained two and I’ve decided that the third is just going to have to teach herself:) And I LOVE your boots-I’m so jealous. They are beautiful. You’ll have to post a pic with you wearing them. I always think I’m going to actually win a PW giveaway- I enter them all and then I enter my husband but I still haven’t won:( Your picture on PW is adorable.

  • Comment by Sara — January 20, 2010 @ 10:34 pm

Great post! My observations are also “smooshed”: (1) The exchange between you and your husband on pull-ups cracked me up!; (2) The boots are oh-so-adorable, I’m completely jealous!; (3) I love the pics of the kids getting into mischief, particularly Rover (I have a female Rover of my own at home); and finally (4) I adored the spread in Southern Living! Every last detail was perfection – I clipped the pages and added them to my inspiration binder!

And finally, those striped tights are AWESOME! I want a pair for me – I wonder if a recent college grad could pull those off without looking like a clown… or a 3 year old???

What a treasure your Valentines are! Just an idea.. and it’s SIMPLE!I placed my vintage valentine collection in a scrapbook with black pages and a black spiral binding. A wide red satin ribbon adorns the front of the book. The valentines show up beautifully against that background and family and guest enjoy flipping through them as they sit on our coffee table every February. (Always LOVE your posts!)

  • Comment by Miia — January 21, 2010 @ 9:49 am

I am a project type :) 17 years ago I was getting married and decided to make a quilty double blanket. Pure red from other side and then transferring to dark blue at the other side. From quilt squares size of 4 * 4 cm (2,5 inch??). I made all the squares. There were houndreds of thousands. I organised them; it took the whole room. Then I started sewing. And sew and sew but it was endless! Finally the wedding day came and blanket was not ready. I collected them all in order to finnish the project later. Since then I have not seen the spare time to do that. But luckily I saved the squares: my daughter has a huge source of different kind of fabrics to study needling. :D

I love your blog and it is a great source of inspiration and positiviness! Thanks for it!

I came across your blog a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it and love your pictures. I saw the boots and then I knew I would like you. I just bought a pair of boots yesterday. I bought my first pair last year and they were much cheaper. I fell in love with them and wore the soles out. I promise you will fall in love with your boots! You have a precious family and your love the Lord is evident through your blog.

I wish I had not already spent my monthly clothing budget or else I might just buy the boots and wear them with really thick socks (I too wear a size 7.5)!

OH- I LOVE those boots! (And how cute, the little legs in them, love that photo :) My dream is to own a pair of Lucchese someday. I heard they are amazing. A bit out of my budget, I’m afraid….
congrats on the pic at PW’s site….I saw the first group and thought they were amazing! I would love to win one of those gift cards, too. I could use a new lens!

Darby – you have to get the diapers on the auto-order w/ amazon. Cheaper and they show up the first of every month. The UPS guys brings them instead of making poor Justin schlep to the store. That is just a cruel setup.

Love the boots! A great investment. I’m saving for either those or Frye boots. Can’t decide. Love the diaper story. I calculate the price per diaper as well. I have 3 under 2 at my house and my can’t understand why I don’t change them every hour or two. Uh..b/c diapers are meant to absorb and keep dry unlike cloth diapers. Anyway. Can’t wait for the recipe. Please post it b/c I think I want it this weekend.:) Happy Friday!

My Southern Living came in the mail today–I loved the article about the house your sister decorated. I didn’t expect to see you mentioned in the article, but there it was!
It was a beautiful article. Thanks for letting me know to look out for it.

love the valentines. put my mind in gear for them. few suggestions: laminate and make refrig magnets, make buttons if the size works, use ceramic tiles to make coasters or trivets (glue them on, glaze over)! what a precious find. i guess they really appeal to me since my b’day is on valentines day! was trying to think how they could be put on blankets and pillows or dresses, but could not figure that one out. sure you can!

Darby, I would love to purchase several of your BooBoo pouches and rice bags. I can’t find any info for your Etsy shop and didn’t find them on the Craft Hope shop. Please let me know if you have any available!

    Thanks!

Hey Darby! My heart melted when I saw all of those adorable valentines. What a treasure! Williams Sonoma has a wreath made out of vintage valentines. Cute!

Love, LOVE the valentines. Would you ever consider a give away or selling them? I, personally, know many people that’d love to have a few of those for their valentine decorating! :)

Thanks for your blog…love the pictures and candidness!

I have those boots and also had a difficult time spending that much money on shoes! But I am obsessed with them and have gotten so many compliments. You will not regret keeping them!

Darby, I’ve never posted on a blog before, but I was struck by your description of the Southern Living couple as being mentors who use their house for God’s glory. We’re building our house and want to be those people. Do you mind sharing what that looks like? I want our house to start off on the right footing as soon as we move in… :)
