I love to play house; when I was younger and even more so now! I guess that’s why I’m itching so bad. Itching to get into the house! We’re getting closer everyday. These last couple weeks we have been working on the tedious things (patching dry wall, repairing crown moulding, painting trim and window mullions, etc) that take a long time and have relatively little to show for it. But that’s ok, at least it’s getting done before we move in. Painting is not fun to do once you’re all moved in. I was working with my friend Lindsay on our Christmas cards this year (she’s a WONDERFUL graphic designer in Dallas, TX– CLICK HERE FOR HER WEBSITE) when I realized that Justin and I have been married 5 years (6 in March) and every single Christmas we have sent our Christmas cards from a different house! This is nothing to be proud of, rather explains why I feel as though sometimes I’ve lost my mind. (Speaking of, I found my Smart Shade make up on Sunday… a really short (3 year old) robber must have stolen it and put it in a toy box!) If you’ve ever moved (even just once) you know the stress of it and if you’ve ever moved with children then you can take the amount of stress a move causes and multiply that times the number of children you have. Pretty soon you can institutionalize yourself! Can you tell that I’m almost there!?
Despite all the moving, I somehow have mustered up the energy to play “house” once all the boxes are unpacked at each house we’ve lived in. Here in the rental house that has not been the case. I have not played house since we’ve been here and I’m chomping at the bit to do so! I consider myself a “people person”. I love to have people over. We have been in the rental house for 7 months now and in 7 months I haven’t had anyone over. Did you know that it’s driving me nuts? We don’t have a table and chairs here. And since we eat our meals either on the floor or on the couch I’ve been a little hesitant to reach out to new friends to have them over to sit on the floor and enjoy a meal. Soon and very soon we’ll be able to sit at a table and invite others to do so with us!! I can’t wait!
Here’s what I can’t wait to do:
hang the blinds
hang the curtains
make our bed
decorate and arrange the girls bedrooms
lay out the rugs
turn on the lamps
arrange the furniture
wash dishes in a sink that doesn’t back up
eat meals at the table or bar
and have more counter top space in the kitchen besides 2.5 feet x 2.5 feet
and of course….. turn on Christmas carols and decorate for Christmas… if all my boxes are unpacked by then!

also, when you get into the new house could you please use the terminology “sofa” and “draperies” instead of “couch” and “curtains”… you’ll sound so much more design savvy. I’m assuming “couch” and “curtains” is just part of the persona you put on for living in that nasty rental house. 🙂 HA! Am I right?

November 8, 2007 at 2:25 pmYou’re right… well, no actually I didn’t know that there was a difference between a couch and a sofa nor did I know there was a difference between curtains and drapes…. like I said, all these moves have really done me in. But I do know there is a difference between a decorator and a designer… you’re a decorator right?! Ha ha!

I know what you mean about being ready to have friends over – I think that’s one of the things I’m most excited about doing when we finally move! And 7 months is a long time – we’re going on 4 and I’m already a little batty!

November 13, 2007 at 10:41 amwe can relate. nathan and i have been married for almost 5 years, and have moved 7 times. the last being when Dylan was 5 days old…thankfully we hired movers (which we had not done before). but STILL moving is not a fun thing. BUT when all is said and done, making a house your home is the best!!
