I’m really trying to tap into my creative side with my post titles… something that grabs your attention and makes you want to know the rest of the story… how did I do?
The first topic of discussion this evening… the time: 9:20 pm. This is a late hour for me and I try not to blog at night because I fear posts written after dark will make no sense. My brain works best at dark if it’s before the sun comes up… not after it has set. So, it’s 9:20 and that means this will be quick because I’m an old fart and because I have to be in the dental torture chair in the morning.
The second topic of discussion must be reported on immediately because I fear I will forget how much fun I had two weekends ago if I don’t report now.
I love these girls and hate that I don’t get to see them more often! When I think of Tallahassee and our time there I think of them. Some I’ve know for a long time {pre-children} and a couple I just met last weekend, nonetheless, we had a wonderful time and most of these girls are champions in my book because they ran a LONG way while being timed. I was there strictly for moral support.
This is my friend LA. You’ve heard me sing her praises before and here I go again with my report that she placed 3rd in her division or age group or whatever they call it! She basically ran 13+ miles in 1 hour and 32 minutes or something completely insane like that. I’m not exactly sure what is taking place in this picture, I was in my car because I was freezing my rear off, rolling the window up on her while she was trying to stall me from getting warm. I gave her that headband and I feel fairly confident it helped her bring home the bronze.
I was not a good photographer that weekend especially during the race because my hands were nearly frozen stiff.
This race took place not too far from my twin sister’s house. So, I also feel like it’s important to explain that being a twin and visiting the town in which your twin lives while apart from your twin can be trouble. My name is Darby but I look like Erika and when hanging out in her part of the country without our her I’ve been known to hug and converse with complete strangers that think I am Erika. Depending on the situation sometimes I explain that I’m not who they think I am and sometimes I just roll with it. It can get a little awkward if they start a conversation and I don’t know what to say… usually that’s when I confess.
This is really a shame that I’m going to jump from a wonderful weekend away with sweet girls who are such an encouragement to me to what I have to look forward to in the morning … but here goes. I have to go to the dentist in the morning and I’m not sure who is feeling more devastated about this, me or the dentist. He most certainly remembers my last filling and has graciously extended his prescription writing abilities to make me comfortable tomorrow while he puts small drills in my mouth that make high pitched sounds. I will have not 1, not 2, but 3 cavities filled in the morning which are all between my molars which means 6 of my teeth are in for some reconstruction. I feel certain you all are asking, “Darby, do you brush your teeth? Do you floss your teeth? Do you sleep with gumdrops and sugar cubes in your mouth?” I have the most wonderful electric toothbrush, been using it for many years {with new brush heads every few months}, I do not drink sweet tea or other sugary drinks, I am rotting my teeth out with unsweet tea and water and occasionally killing myself slowly with sugar-free beverages made with poison that apparently don’t prevent tooth decay, and I floss at least once a day. I have floss in my purse, in my bathroom, in my kitchen and the console of my car. I consider myself an excellent dental patient which is why news of such dental work is devastating along with the fact that my TMJ joints are out of whack and dental work can be quite “uncomfortable” to keep it PG. Now, I’m just hoping that the Novocaine will work and that my jaw will stay in socket while he’s working, if both of those work out along with the prescription happy pills I may come back with a new outlook on dental work. Grab yo’ floss.

March 14, 2011 at 10:44 pmSo sorry about the mess that you have to endure in the a.m. thinking of you….and your dentist. 😉 Also, I think it’s hi.lar.ri.ous. that you sometimes roll with it when someone thinks you’re your sis. ha ha! you know, you could really play some fun games with that…. well, and get yourself into trouble. I can tell you apart in pics where you’re next to each other, but apart and in real life…don’t think so. Can’t wait to finally meet one of you so I can try. 😉
Ashley
March 14, 2011 at 10:51 pmI’m with you on being an old fart 🙂 Blog posts after 9 pm are dangerous… but good job you for keeping this one a making sense post 🙂
Good luck tomorrow with the dentist!!

March 14, 2011 at 11:00 pmI’ll be praying for you! Cavities are such a bummer.

March 14, 2011 at 11:04 pmMy husband has an identical twin and the same thing happens to him. I think he worked in the brother’s place when they were about 20 . I don’t know how he pulled it off, but he did.

March 14, 2011 at 11:23 pmGood luck in the morning! I too have terrible teeth- just because. When my husband and I first got married he hadn’t been to the dentist in like 3 years….I just KNEW he’d have a cavity. Nope, not one! The dentist even tells me {every time} how my husband has some of the most perfect teeth he’s ever seen. And he of course never flosses…so unfair.

March 14, 2011 at 11:30 pmI have had my share of cavities…soft teeth or something I was told once…whatever the reason…I hope all goes quickly and painlessly tomorrow….and just be glad it’s 2011. Imagine what it was like years ago…I know I would have been miserable!

March 14, 2011 at 11:37 pmDarby. Good luck with your dental appointment tomorrow. It sounds scary but you will be relieved when it is over. It is funny that you mentioned your TMJ problems. I have been having some of those issues myself lately and as I read info on the internet (the best place to do medical research, duh!) I became increasingly freaked out (to put it mildly). I did, however, find a quick and easy little technique that has helped me big time. Here it is… place the tip of your tongue on the back of your front teeth… open your mouth as far as you can while still pressing your tongue to your teeth… hold for 30 seconds… repeat 3 times everyday. I know it sounds crazy but it has helped me with my TMJ.

March 14, 2011 at 11:42 pmhello darby! i’ve followed your blog for a while(you are always so encouraging, thank you!). but i thought it was funny because i actually know a few of the women in that picture! one of them married my brother’s friend, i babysat for another when i was in school in tallahassee and i’ve known the woman sitting next to you ever since i was little! they are all wonderful, encouraging women and i’m glad you were able to have a fun girls weekend!
i hope your dentist appointment goes well! i’ll be praying it’s quick and painless! (i’m not a big fan of the dentist either) 🙂

March 14, 2011 at 11:45 pmI hate that you are having to endure the unfortunate trip to the ole dentist…hope all goes well with the happy drugs! Now, if this has taught you only one thing, I hope it’s that UNsweet tea causes cavities and is bad for you! For the love of all that is holy & southern, please be good to yourself and drink sweet tea through a straw! 🙂 Life is just too short! Good luck!

March 15, 2011 at 12:51 amDarby… It’s funny because I feel like it’s so unfair….
My husband has crooked teeth, he brushes, he DOES NOT FLOSS… and he has NEVER had a cavity. In 30 years, never!
I on the other hand am like you, I have perfectly straight teeth–never having braces and brush twice a day and floss. A picture of dental health. However I have had 7 cavities and 1 route canal. They say it’s because the grooves in my teeth are especially deep and that no matter how much I brush it’s just going to happen! Hoping my son gets the best of both worlds but after already 1 crown and he’s only 3, it’s not looking too hopeful. Thank the Lord for Insurance!

March 15, 2011 at 6:21 amI have the hygenist next Thursday and am dreading it. I think its the noise that is the worst. You will be fine. And can reward yourself with a glass of water (through a straw) when you are done! Good luck. I know that you will be brave and strong.

March 15, 2011 at 6:57 amWhew! Firstly – I check your blog daily for updates, regardless of the title of each post, but it’s sweet of you to aim for more intrigue. I love your writing style and reading what’s happening with your family (it feels kind of creepy typing that out to a person I haven’t met), and the “dental torture” part of your header DID make me go “ohhh dear”. I’m sorry you have to have fillings. I also laughed out loud when I read the part about sleeping with gumdrops and drinking poison sugar-free beverages. I hope the visit to the dentist goes smoothly.
You are such a kind friend to support your buddies on race day! It makes all the difference in the world to have someone cheering you on when you’re running, or to lend them a stylin’ headband.
Good luck today!
Megan
March 15, 2011 at 7:20 amGood luck at the dentist! I hope it goes much better than you’re expecting it to.
My twin cousins do the exact same thing that you did over the weekend. They say that it’s not worth the trouble of trying to explain who’s who, so they roll with it and inform the other of the conversation so they’re not completely out of the loop the next time they run into the person.

March 15, 2011 at 7:26 amYou got me with the title!
I SOOO hear you on the after dark thing!

March 15, 2011 at 8:05 amEeeewww good luck at the dentist! Torture indeed, funny as my dentist offered me up a prescription as well but I was afraid to take it.

March 15, 2011 at 8:18 amGood Luck! The dentist is the worst but you will feel so accomplished when you are out of there!

March 15, 2011 at 8:23 amMy teeth are horrible. A dentist once asked me if I was bulimic! (I’m not)

March 15, 2011 at 8:29 amGood luck at the dentist!
Re: your teeth troubles – do you read the blog Mighty Girl? I only ask because Maggie had the same issues (well, way worse than yours, actually) in that she was fanatical about dental hygiene, but was still having bad dental check-ups, etc – root canals, everything! Apparently the teeth can be indicative of underlying health problems: NOT TO FREAK YOU OUT, or anything – but she has several really interesting posts about your teeth being an ecosystem and the benefits of acupuncture, etc.
Just reminded me when you mentioned that you have very healthy habits (flossing, brushing) – but are still developing cavities. May be worth a read: https://mightygirl.com/2011/01/04/getting-my-health-in-order-part-iii-teeth/

March 15, 2011 at 8:43 amYou are hilareous!!!! I hope the dental work went off without a hitch! I have the same experience when traveling without my sisters- even though I am NOT a twin, or triplet. I have 2 sisters- 1 close in age, 1 not so close in age- and people have, many times mistaken us for eachother- so strange!

March 15, 2011 at 8:46 amGood luck at the dentist. I am a brusher and flosser but still get all the cavaties without the treats. Last dentist visit I cried, like ugly cry in the chair when he told me I had cavaties. The dentist felt really bad and gave me a discount on getting them fixed. lol.

March 15, 2011 at 9:01 amI’m so glad that I got to finally meet you – it was such a fun weekend and I’m ready for another one! I hope your dentist appt is not as bad as expected!

March 15, 2011 at 9:02 amGood Luck at the Dentist today! I was in the same area this weekend, wish I could have run into you! I have an older sister and apparently I don’t have a name because since I was in high school still I am not referred to as my name, but only as my sister’s little sister…I’m used to it. Nice post after dark!

Nitrous Gas
It helped SO much more than the Halcion pills and valium. AND I didn’t need a sitter for the rest of the day!

March 15, 2011 at 9:37 amOh, girl. I feel you on this. I had the exact same thing happen in the fall. 3 cavities between teeth = 6 places to drill. I brush, I floss and it doesn’t matter. My husband does none of the aforementioned and has perfect teeth. So annoying!
Also, did your friend LA every work at Kannakuk camps in the summer? I feel like we worked together in Missouri.
The Mom
March 15, 2011 at 9:49 amOh. I feel your pain. I avoid the dentist like the plague. I would rather visit my Ob/Gyn ten times than go to the dentist. So I am thinking and praying for you. I also laughed hilariously when I read about how you have to be Erika when you visit her hometown. My mom is an identical twin, and when her twin would come to visit my mom in her small town it would lead to all kinds of interesting conversations with some of my mom’s friends including: “Are you mad at me? I saw you at the Post Office and you didn’t speak?” or “You sailed right by me in the grocery store and acted as though you had never seen me before.” My mom always said she had to “kiss and make up” with some of her friends after her twin came to town! I guess it is just another one of those odd things that identical twins have to cope with that no one else understands! Sometime I will tell you about what we as children of identical twins experienced. It was interesting this past year when the twin “cousins” (that’s what we call ourselves)got together as adults to share our memories. We had many of the same things in common. Life is always interesting, is it not?!
Blessings!
Katherine @ Grass Stains
March 15, 2011 at 9:58 amOh goodness. Well, it certainly sounds like it’s no fault of yours that you’re having all these dental issues! Weak enamel, maybe? I am soooooo sorry you have to go through that. I don’t usually have bad trips to the dentist, but I’ve said many times that I’d rather go to the OBGYN than the dentist. No one understands that. I can’t explain why I’d rather feel violated in one place rather than the other, but it’s just the truth.
Katherine @ Grass Stains
March 15, 2011 at 9:59 amOh, wow. Maybe The Mom and I were separated at birth!

March 15, 2011 at 10:22 amYour story about being mistaken for Erika made me laugh out load and nod my head. My mom is a twin and has lived in Auburn for about 35 years or so. My Aunt (my mom’s twin) moved to Auburn about 15 years after my mom and that happened to my Aunt all the time! She would go along with them thinking she was my mom sometimes, too. Now that my Aunt has lived there for so long it happens to my mom a lot too! It totally cracks me up!
Regina
March 15, 2011 at 11:46 amMy husband is also a twin, and whenever we go to the town where he lives (which is often, beings that his younger brother and my mom also live there). He is always being mistaken for his brother, and he goes through the same awkwardness of people coming up, shaking his hand and start diving into conversation, and then he has to go, “um, I am Aron.” You talking about it totally made me laugh, since I see the same thing all the time!
Yikes-good luck at the dentist, I hope it goes okay for you. I used to work for a dentist, and hopefully the pills work out for you, they usually do a good a good job. It is really hard when you have TMJ also, sending you good vibes…
Regina
March 15, 2011 at 11:49 amI forgot to add on one of the previous poster’s comments: Nitrous gas works so well too! My oldest uses it when he has to have work done, and it relaxes him and makes the visit so much easier on him.
Andrea
March 15, 2011 at 12:56 pmI am like you – always been great at flossing and brushing and I had four cavities at my last appt. Yes, it’s embarrassing!! I don’t know if its somehow related to having children, or if its b/c it coincided with my taking up a hard candy habit (although I still brushed 4 times a day). They suggested using ACT mouthwash instead of my Crest Prohealth. Fingers crossed- I need to go again soon for a cleaning.

March 15, 2011 at 12:57 pmhey…i was in seaside for the race too!! i kept thinking about your sister while i was there (bc i read her blog too), but how fun that you were there too! i was with some friends who ran in the race, but the shingles had me sidelined. oh well…next year!
Rachel
March 15, 2011 at 1:36 pmI live in the same town as my identical twin sister, and can totally relate to having conversations with complete strangers. I think some people have been offended wondering why I (or my sister) weren’t more friendly after running into them somewhere. I can’t go to Publix without someone calling me by my sister’s name. My hubby laughs at how much I roll with it because sometimes it is much easier!

March 15, 2011 at 4:32 pmThe dental stuff must be a sign of maturity:-) I had to have $3000 worth of dental work last summer after a lifetime of perfect checkups and a flossing addiction.

March 15, 2011 at 6:15 pmI noticed one of your girlfriends is rockin a Stella &Dot necklace. If anyone likes it you can check it out on http://www.stelladot.com/meghantinker
Hope you survived the dentist!

March 15, 2011 at 6:23 pmHey Darby! From one twin to another….You are SO wrong for that! Barkley does that exact same thing when she comes into town. Often she and Mom will find themselves in Target or somewhere and there will be one of my precious angels from school or years passed who just want to say hello to their (I’m almost sure their favorite teacher 🙂 ) Mrs. Mann. Barkley sometimes poitely says “hey sweetie” or either, if she might be in a mood, turn the other cheek so to speak. Well for the twin on the side that has to pick up all the broken pieces, just grin and bare it. It does take a LOT of explaining and answering of questions. My favorite…. Do you both thik alike, or do you know if she’s hurting. It is hilarious how much it happens. TWINS ROCK!!!!

March 15, 2011 at 6:24 pmThat is HILARIOUS that you play “Erika” in her hometown. Love your blog!!

March 15, 2011 at 7:31 pmif you are prone to caries, ask your dentist for MI paste by GC America. It is a wonderful thing!

March 15, 2011 at 7:44 pmI have had more cavities in the last few years than I have every had in my life. I also have been using Toms of Maine toothpaste the paste few years, as I thought it was healthier. I think my cavities and the low flouride content of the toothpaste are the culprit. I am back to Crest (with enamal shield). I’ll see in a few months if it helps. Hope everthing goes well.

March 15, 2011 at 8:32 pmTMJ problems = NO FUN!! Good luck!

March 15, 2011 at 8:47 pmWow, as a hygienist, I know people don’t love the dentist…but wow! And for The Mom and Katherine, lots of women say they’d rather see the OBGYN rather than the dentist. I so don’t get it, but you’re not alone 🙂
Darby, have you tried prescription fluoride gel or MI Paste? Both can be pretty helpful. We’re finding more problems with sports/energy drinks, diet soda, and other acidic beverages that can cause decay due to lots of acid, even if there’s not a lot of sugar. In any case, hope you have a good dental visit tommorrow! Being numb is a good reason to eat ice cream and popsicles 🙂

March 15, 2011 at 8:58 pmDarby,
I can completely identify with your twin issues. I too have been in situations where “I roll with it” and some where I identify myself as the other twin. When we used to live in the same town, it was even more confusing. We were also pregnant at the same time with me due 6 weeks after while living in the same town. Then we got comments like “I see you everywhere” and “it seems line u have been pregnant forever.”. Anyway, hope you survived the dentist and FYI my twin is a dentist in NC if u ever need any advice. Ashley Bowers

March 15, 2011 at 9:04 pmListerine, morning and night, and you’ll save lots’o’pain and lots’o’money. Add Listerine toothpaste and it’s even better. Your dentist will be amazed after 3 months and you’d don’t have to tell him/her your secret.
Brittny Hemphill
March 15, 2011 at 9:27 pmOh my goodness I am so glad I didn’t come up to you at the race now!!!! We have never met, but I know who you and Erika are from Auburn and your blogs. I wanted to come up and say hello and finally meet you (because everyone else I knew at Auburn knew you — I transferred there, so I was a little behind in the social life) and I totally thought you were Erika because she lives here!!!!! I am so glad I didn’t say anything!!! Your friend did an incredible job to finish so well! My husband ran and it was his first half marathon and he had 6 weeks to train. (Thanks to his best friend signing them up!) Hope things went well at the dentist and I’ll make sure to ask before introducing myself next time I happen to see you or your twin! : )
Lynn
March 15, 2011 at 10:28 pmJust so you know, being pregnant is really hard on your teeth! I think they are really vulnerable because your body is working hard on the baby’s development. So don’t be so hard on yourself!

March 16, 2011 at 8:38 amoh you poooor thing. i hate dental work too. and i have HORRIBLE teeth from genetics. i have to use laughing gas just for them to clean my teeth. i am feeling your pain. hope it goes well

March 16, 2011 at 8:58 amDarby, I brush my teeth MANY times a day! Still had cavities (no more because they’ve all been filled!! 🙂 The silver fillings have been replaced by those white ones so I can laugh really big with no flash going off:)))) Ken tells everyone that there are toothbrushes all over our house! And more to replace those:) My late husband, Bill, had GREAT dental checkups and at the most, brushed his teeth only 2 times a day! He’d brush his teeth first thing in the morning, THEN eat breakfast and head to work! And of course NEVER EVER flossed. SO, I just don’t think it matters how well we take care of our teeth….it’s all in our genes:) And I love going to the dentist….he gives a package of goodies….toothbrush, bottled water, AND A FRESHLY BAKED COOKIE!!:)
Grace
March 16, 2011 at 10:45 amI completely feel your (dental) pain. I, too, consider myself an excellent dental patient but have just about the worst teeth ever. My husband on the other hand, hardly ever flosses and has perfect teeth. Sometimes life just isn’t fair!! I always dread the dentist (no offense to any of you who are dentists out there). Good luck – I know you’ll do great!
Dana
March 16, 2011 at 10:59 amI take excellent care of my teeth and it just doesn’t matter, I always have cavities! My dentist says I have soft teeth with lots of crevices and grooves. I, like you, hate going to the dentist.
GL!!!

March 16, 2011 at 11:45 amOh lawsy. Good luck. Hope everything went well this morning.
And a shout out to your friend who burned up that half-marathon. That is some serious awesomeness right there (or “allsomeness”, if you’re the sweet 6- year-old kid I ran the NY marathon for who made me a card with that on it!)
Kristin
March 16, 2011 at 12:37 pmDarby you were AWESOME cheerleader – even standing in the cold until the caboose – that was me:) – crossed the finish line!!
Hopefully you have lots of meds to take the pain of the dentist away or maybe we all just need to head back to the beach this weekend.
Carrie
March 16, 2011 at 1:22 pmDarby – the section in this post about being a twin made me laugh! I’m close friends with identical twin sisters and they live in the same town. They have the same exact problem you described and play it off in the same way. Even my husband thinks it’s hard to tell them apart some times. I’m guessing your close girlfriends, like theirs, have your differences down — but it can be confusing for acquaintances.
Thanks for the laugh and I hope your trip to the dentist was as painless as possible.

March 16, 2011 at 2:16 pmI dread the dentist. Blech. Best of luck!
Lindsey
March 16, 2011 at 6:50 pmI hear ya on the dentist. My only bit of advice is to get a second opinion. More than once in my life, I have been told that I have numerous cavities only to find out that another dentist can’t even find them. I’m sure you love your dentist as do I, but in this day and age when people are unemployed without dental insurance and therefore not going to the dentist anymore- I would not put it past them to “find” cavities that may or may not be there.
Ashley
March 16, 2011 at 8:48 pmDO NOT FEEL BAD! I went to the dentist three years ago and has 15 CAVITIES ALL AT THE SAME TIME! Not only do I go to the dentist every 6 months, but much like you I brush and floss constantly. Since then, I cry every single time I have to go to the dentist, and cry immediately after finding out that I have yet another cavity. It has gotten to the point of the dentist not even telling me that I have one, and me only knowing because they schedule me another appointment for like two weeks later 🙂 I HATE THE DENTIST, but at the same time I am so thankful that I can afford and are able to get the chance to go!
Lauren
March 16, 2011 at 10:05 pmI am so with you on the dental torture. I went yesterday for the first time in a couple of years, maybe a little longer. We haven’t been since we moved back to AL from Nashville, simply because I hate to go to the dentist. I have never had any trouble or a cavity – only braces in elementary school. And yesterday: a problem tooth… decay. Yuck. So I get to go back next Monday for more fun! I guess that’s what I get for not going in a while. 😉
Tara
March 17, 2011 at 10:00 amOOOOhhhh so sorry about the dentil work! I found the insulated cup like Starbucks cup you had at Hobby Lobby, they are zebra striped and have an initial on it for only 6.99 go get ya one.
