This Is for the Birds

Literally for the birds.
This is one you’ll want to do outside. We’re supposed to have a week of sunshine so we hung ours out in the open… but they would probably “weather” best under the soffit. The girls had a lot of fun making these. It took me back to our early days of marriage when Justin and I made our own suet. We actually packed our freezer full of it one year. This recipe is similar to what we used to make {although we added raisins, nuts, and other dried fruit… the woodpeckers loved it}. You can find lard at the grocery store in the Crisco aisle, it’s in a green and white box and made by Armour.

We made our little pine cone feeders on Saturday afternoon as I was trying to prepare for our gathering. Sometimes I think I’ve lost my mind when I decide to do a “kid project” while getting ready for a “grown up party”… but it wasn’t too bad!

We had a great time Saturday night. I did not have to prepare the food, it was a covered dish and everything was delicious. And I’m mad that I didn’t take a single picture… maybe next time!

I hope you all are enjoying your Monday! It’s sunny and chilly here… everyone is down for naps which calls for some “naptime tea” for this Momma!

We loved those as kids and I swanee (what we would say instead of swear) that I ate more of the PB and nuts than the birds! Too cute!

You are super mom!!! What a lucky family you have. Glad you took the time for tea. Hope you put your feet up. It’s so tempting to use that time to run around doing house chores while no little ones can interrupt but tea time is better for the soul

Wow, Darby, you are Martha amazing! If you and Eddie Ross teamed up I would be scared to see what would happen. Do you have a secret book you are not telling us about? 🙂 WHERE on EARTH do you get all these ideas? So cute!!

For whatever reason, this post reminds me of homemade granola – maybe it’s because I didn’t know what that “suet” word was and so I thought it meant granola 🙂 Anyway, a friend passed along a wonderful homemade granola recipe – healthy and wonderful! I’m going to post it on the blog later…

Let me know how those work out. We made them last year and hung them outside our den window- the girls watched patiently day after day for a bird to partake of their new food and maybe one bird ever came?!?! I am not sure why. We do live in a subdivision with lots of construction. Dunno. Anyway-they were so upset…
