Sisterhood & Motherhood

Happy Friday, Rovers! The sun is shining here which makes me very happy. My teeth are also very clean for the first time in many years. I won’t tell you how long it had been since I had been to the dentist… but a lot.ย  I was totally convinced every tooth in my head was rotting out but thankfully I left with a good report of no cavities! Although I do have to get my wisdom teeth all yanked soon {all are in & I should have had this done about 10+ years ago} and then after they’re out I’m probably going to get braces on the bottom. Just what I wanted for my 30th birthday! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m not here to talk about my teeth but my sister, first, then my kids. Because I love both my sister and my kids to the core of their beings from the core of mine. I’m not sure if you’ve ever had the pleasure of opening a major magazine and seeing your sister’s face plastered across several of it’s pages but for me it was thrilling and most definitely blog-worthy. I’m thinking about having the articles matted and framed to hang around my home…. that’s how proud I am!

ย eCOASTALLIV

I feel certain she doesn’t like me to brag on her but what kind of sister would I be if I didn’t mention this? Coastal Living magazineย has featured 3 of her fabulous kitchens in their March issue {which I think is in bookstores now and coming to newstands soon!}. I’m thrilled because I think she’s the most talented & deservingย person currently exisiting on our planet, she’s stinkin’ hilarious, and she shared a womb with me for the first 9 months of our lives and a room with me for the first 20-something years of our lives

I talk to her at least once a day, usually 5, and we are also online chatters. Our online conversations are always very serious and in most of our chats we try to solve the world’s problems. Like this one from last week that I pirated from gmail …

Erika: do you watch 30Rock on NBC on Thurs
Erika: it is so funny
me: no
Erika: they talk about YouFace
me: i don’t watch anything
Erika: when you have a free minute go watch it online you can watch online
me: except celebrity rehab
Erika: it is so funny
me: on VH1
Erika: i love celebrity rehab
me: and it makes me cry and not sleep at night
Erika: and intervention
me: because those people are so lost
Erika: it is so awful but so good i know. it’s sad
me: especially dennis rodman ugh
Erika: maybe you could invite him over sometime to make a heated rice bag or something
me: and then thereโ€™s this new girl who’s aย brat
Erika: or some mice kisses now THAT would make for some good blog material
me: theres no doubt i could win him over with a mouse kiss or dishmat
Erika: Darby & Dennis Rodman

Ok, so pick up the March issue of Coastal Living… it’s slammed full of beautiful inspiration {and my sister too}!

Ok, before I move on… I need to clarify something from the last post.

If it were we would not have shared a room with another couple. ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t get me wrong, their house is fabulous in every way, just a little bit smaller way.

We are still running an infirmary here at the house. The kids are all feeling better but to be safe we’re taking the entire week off from preschool and other routine things. Which has unfortunately resulted in cabin fever and slight agitation from all members of the family. As of yesterday, the kids had climbed the walls for 4 days straight.

John Martin found my purse and my gum…ย and was convinced he was hiding it in his mouth so well that I’d never know he had it.

Don’t worry, much to his dismay, I quickly fished the gum from his jaws.

Yesterday, to relieve us of our cabin fever, we met Justin for a quick field trip to the great outdoors.

It was just what the doctor mother ordered. The fresh air and sunshine wore them out! We came home and had a few desperately needed haircuts last night…

Have a good weekend… Rover sends a slobbery gum kiss your way.

Yay for Erika! I’m going to snatch that issue up asap. I was completely bummed because my Southern Living subscription was done the issue before the one she was in, and you just can’t buy Southern Living in Maine! (And currently no cash for a renewal; we have a heating system to purchase!)
Glad the family is feeling better; those are great outdoor pics!

Your gchat seriously cracks me up. Picturing you having a Come to Jesus with Dennis Rodman. He’d be all “Naw Darbs, you don’t understand. I got this. Drinkins’ what I do. Now can we reheat my rice pack? My achin’ bones are gettin’ cold”

Hi, Darby!!! We’ve been potty training around here and my online time has been dramatically decreased, but after a day or two of DRY britches, I decided to splurge and check a few blogs. I smiled when I saw your had posted ๐Ÿ™‚

Your sister is a rock star. For reals. First Southern Living (totally bought it) and now Coastal Living. I am SOOOOOO glad she’s getting so much publicity!! Hooray!

Your weekend looks like it was a total blast. Had me coming up with some scheme to do something similar soon before a few good military friends head out for their next assignments. Thanks for the potty break!

Yay for Erika! I wish I had read this a few hours earlier, like before I went to B&N. I guess I’ll be making a return trip:-) Oh, and don’t feel bad about your teeth. I went for the first time in many years a few years ago, but my report wasn’t so good. I had a ton of cavities and I need to have my wisdom teeth out. Most of the cavities are taken care of, but I’ve been putting off that appointment with the oral surgeon (ugh!). When those are out, I want braces too, but just on top.

Okay, that does it! I just have to leave a comment. I have been biting my lip, wringing my hands, hemming and hawing because it would pain me to think about you never even noticing it. But I don’t care, I must get this off my chest. I love your heart! And I am absolutely sure that if we lived near each other we would be good friends, the kind of friends who meet on Friday afternoons eating Twizzlers, drinking diet coke, loving on each other’s children, discussing the most recent Celebrity rehab (LIVE for it, love Mackenzie Philips..please, please tell me that that they will invite her to be the new in-house counselor..she would be SO GREAT! As for that new little girl…not so sad to see her go), sharing what God has been revealing to us through our lives, books, fellowship, children, etc. Last week I was SO CLOSE to finally responding because you mentioned two of my favorite authors: Tozer (Knowing God just expanded my finite view of the infinite God we love) and Brother Lawrence (my mom introduced me to him through Devotional Classics when I was a senior in high school and he has been such a dear friend to me ever since). Also, considering your recent inspiration/revelation about the sacredness of all we do each and every day I have a wonderful book that I read in high school and reread every few years. Let me warn you, the title may sound..corny…but fear not! It is a delicious read with the premise being that as God is a Creator and we are made in His image we are called to be creative in all we do (as moms) with our homes, families, meals, etc. The big reveal now: The Hidden Art of Homemaking by Edith Schaeffer. Easy read, so applicable, inspiring, and refreshing. It is NOT a formulaic how to raise a Godly home type of book. Okay, what else do I need to cover with you before we can be good friends? 1. I am not a stalker. 2. I am a mom of two gorgeous red heads, Henry and Sadie, and wife to the gorgeous Peter Lima, Jr. We live in Boston right now. It is our 8th home in our 11 years of marriage. 3. I so appreciate your vulnerability, honesty, humor, and unabashed/unjaded excitement about Jesus and what God is doing in your life. Thank you for being real, and thank you for reading this. I hope your family has a wonderful weekend, enjoy the sunshine! ….4. I’m so stoked to check out your sister’s article in my Coastal Living. It is downstairs on my coffee table but I’m saving it for my flight next week. CAN’T WAIT!

  • Katherine
    February 26, 2010 at 4:13 pm

Get those wisdom teeth out ASAP! I was 32 and had three taken out at once (I didn’t have 4….genetic freak!) The best part was the sleeping gas…I remember talking and the next thing I woke up and it was all over…..the worst part was waiting until I was 32 to have my wisdom teeth out…the older you are, the worse the recovery is (hate to break it to you, but someone has to!)

As always, I love your blog…your family is adorable, I love your sister too and can’t wait for my issue of Coastal Living to get here! Glad everyone is feeling better!

First, today I was counting how many years since the dentist for me(WAY to many) and then thought of the fear that all of my teeth would have to get fillings. Second, Your sister deserves some sisterly bragging, what an awesome accomplishment. I will have to go to B&N to look at it. Thirs,I almost peed my pants reading ya’lls chat. And I do agree with her, you should watch 30 rock. So stinking funny. Ok, I have to know, where did you get your girls’ precious cowboy boots?? My girlie needs some pronto!

Simply can’t wait for my new CL to arrive – and probably won’t, because I’ll finally be in the States, and can go pick one up! I’m so excited for E’s publications – first the Southern Living, now Coastal Living – you’re certainly not the only person who feels she deserves it.

    OMGosh – WHEN did Rover morph from baby boy to little guy? It seems to happen so quickly with little boys – my daughter’s good friend, Michael did the same thing – we went away for three weeks at Christmas – when we left he still resembled a baby a bit, when we returned, he was all “big” boy. {sigh}

First, I love your blog! It brightens my day when I see a new post to read. Second, Your children are too stinkin’ cute. And last but not least, Im in the same dental boat as you are! It had been years since my teeth were cleaned and the first thing my dentist asked was when I was planning on having my wisdom teeth extracted! Well, my wizzy’s were finally pulled last friday. It was a piece of cake…I was up and running the very next day(two were impacted..not good)! Braces for my bottom teeth are also in my very near future. Not so thrilled about that…being 22 and single doesnt mix very well with a mouth full of metal! But I keep reminding myself that the end result will be worth it!

    dearie sweetie darby,
oh i have so many things i want love to chat with you about. can’t we just meet at starbucks?
first, when are we meeting up in real life? if you can make it to knoxville tom night, our local presbyterian church is hosting an ‘evening with c.s. lewis’. i’m so excited and i’ll most certainly think of you. just haul the sickies on up here and i’ll tend them back to wellness and we’ll cook and sew and talk and make cupcakes and plant a seed garden.
second, i’m in love with everything erica does. her work is amazing. you two are so blessed.
third, the rice bags are so much fun—-and my hilarious children make them even more fun than they were originally intended.
fourth, if i told you how long it’s been since i’ve had a pap smear, you would chastise me all the way to the gynecologist and back. let’s see, the littlest one is 7……so yeah, 8 years!! yikes. i know, i know. i pinky swear i’ll go soon. and good for you on the ‘no cavity’ report.
and lastly, thank you for sharing your sweet and sacred moments with us. i’m really grateful and want you to know that what you do makes a difference in the lives of others.
lots of love to all the fam!

I stumbled across your site via b*spoke and feel it was providential. I just got my C.Living in the mail and loved your sister’s rooms. Was pulling pages to add to my idea book.
I also must add you are a HOOT! I thought my friends setting me up with unemployed, just out of re-hab, no driver license men- living in their parents basement, and who just need a good woman like me to take care of them kind of men was funny. I mean really, seriously (can you hear the SNL sarcasm?), do they not know me?!?!?!! But you posting your single friend with I’M AVAILABLE across his chest for all your readers to see made me laugh and just think…Now, there is love! You are a good friend! I also thought; Now Lord, there is a man who is set-up worthy.
You have been bookmarked. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. Thanks for being a kindred spirit.

So excited for your sister… she has such a gift. As for your wisdom teeth post… I too had mine out (all four) when I turned 30 and then got braces. Not fun, but you’ll be pleased with the results in the long run.

So exciting for your sister! I’m always looking for great inspiration pics, in the event that I’m lucky enough to remodel my kitchen one day, and can’t wait to spend an hour digging into that issue!
Sorry the kids are still under the weather. ๐Ÿ™ Hope they’re feeling better now!

I was at Barnes and Noble last night, and when I saw Erika’s picture I squealed, “I LOVE HER!!!!” I startled the poor folks standing beside me! I gobbled up the great issue…these homes were sooo different than the home she did in Southern Living, but still sooo Erika. I was delighted to hear you had no cavities…I had my first, and so far, my only one at 37 (I’m 49)…but I had my wisdom teeth out ONE at a time…OUCH!!! We moved a lot when I was younger…my son and daughter both had them out in their late teens, early twenties…ask for a steroid medi-pac to prevent swelling…it made all the difference for my daughter. A short plea to Edie! Please, please get a pap smear yearly!!! I have only had one sexual partner, no HPV, but unfortunately cervical/uterine cancer runs in my family. I was the youngest to be diagnosed with in situ cervical cancer at age 34…I had a cone biopsy, radiation, but no hysterectomy, even though I had had a tubal ligation. I will be fifty in October, still have a regular 28 day cycle, and am not on hormone replacement. Most importantly…I was around to finish raising my children, who are now 23 and 25!! Make an appointment TODAY!!!

My brother suggested I’d this way site. He / she has been absolutely perfect. That submit really manufactured the evening. You cannot contemplate exactly how much time frame I’d used with this info! Thanks!
